Church Business Manager

Job Summary

The Church Business Manager (CBM) is responsible for assisting the Head of Staff in administering the operations of the church as approved by the Session.  The CBM administers all financial operations of the church, handles human resource functions, supervises custodial staff and oversees facility operations.  This position also serves as the liaison to the Board of Trustees.  The CBM reports directly to the Pastor/Head of Staff.

Essential Functions

Financial Management

  • Carry out accounting processes and procedures, including general ledger, financial statements, fixed assets and tax compliance
  • Manage cash function related to contributions (and giving statements) and disbursements
  • Draft annual budget based on input from various church committees
  • Coordinate and track investments/disbursements for all endowment and trust funds benefitting the church as well as gifts of stock
  • Provide audit assistance and financial analysis as needed

Facilities Management

  • Supervise maintenance of all buildings, grounds and equipment, acting as church representative with contractors
  • Administer policies and procedures concerning property and facility use, including security measures
  • Coordinate and advise on insurance issues and coverage, ensuring adequacy of policies
  • Oversee purchasing function

Human Resource Management

  • Supervise custodial and financial/support staff (currently 6)
  • Process payroll and maintain payroll records for all employees
  • Maintain personnel records and administer employee benefit, insurance and pension plans
  • Ensure compliance with personnel policies of the church
  • Monitor and implement changes in employment law and tax rules 

Other Duties

  • Serve as resource to several church governing bodies and committees
  • Attend Board of Trustees meetings and annual budget meetings
  • Prepare all annual reports for Presbytery and General Assembly
  • Review monthly financial statements of WGPC Early Childhood Center

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

  • Full-time position with standard office hours
  • Evening meetings 2 – 3 times per month and occasional attendance at Sunday morning meetings of the congregation

Desired Qualifications and Background

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred with emphasis in business, accounting and/or non-profit management
  • Experience with church or fund accounting a plus
  • Team player, demonstrating strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Excellent analytical skills with high attention to detail
  • Ability to maintain absolute confidentiality
  • Strong organizational skills and multi-tasking abilities
  • Open to innovation
