CharacterPlus

Executive Director

Reports to:  Executive Director of EducationPlus or designee and CharacterPlus Executive Advisory Board (EAB)

Application Timeframe:  Position will remain open until filled with screening interviews beginning July 28, 2017.

Position Objective

The Executive Director will raise the required philanthropic support, implement strategic direction, provide staff leadership and ensure mission alignment.   The Executive Director will position CharacterPlus as a premier organization in character education both locally and nationally.

Fundraising and Development

  • Create and execute a plan to grow CharacterPlus revenue and financial position meeting specific goals established on an annual basis
  • Cultivate donor relationships and oversee all communication efforts to create a high-level of donor engagement 
  • Create long-term sustainable funding sources
  • Develop, maintain and administer the annual budget in collaboration with CharacterPlus Staff
  • Provide support for development of grant applications and leadership with implementation of grant projects
  • Maintain and expand relationships with community partners
  • Provide direct oversight of events
  • Collaborate with Executive Advisory Board and Superintendents’ Council to help achieve the CharacterPlus program mission and goals

Membership and Brand Recognition

  • Oversee and help create and execute a plan, in collaboration with the CharacterPlus Staff, to grow CharacterPlus memberships and clients outside the St. Louis region, meeting specific goals established on an annual basis
  • Recommend active membership and participation in Association of Fundraising Professionals
  • Become active in the community and use contacts for the advancement of the organization
  • Oversee and, in collaboration with the CharacterPlus Staff, establish strategic directives for character education programming
  • Serve as executive liaison to the community at large, thus is responsible for overall image and reputation of the CharacterPlus brand
  • Develop strong relationships with school administrators and, in collaboration with CharacterPlus Staff, identify key target districts/schools, present advantages of CharacterPlus membership and follow-up as appropriate
  • Develop and maintain relationships with local and national media contacts, corporate executives and state/federal officials
  • Develop, grow and maintain relationships with each member of the CharacterPlus EAB
  • Collaborate with the EAB’s Chairperson to set agendas for Director’s meetings and responsible for the organization of these meetings

Team Leadership and Supervision

  • Supervise and develop effective working relationships with all CharacterPlus staff, setting an atmosphere for achievement within the work environment
  • Promote and develop knowledge of, respect for and skills to engage with those of other cultures and backgrounds
  • Create and ensure a supportive organizational culture among staff, volunteers and organizational stakeholders
  • Recruit, interview, select and retain CharacterPlus staff
  • Provide management, supervision and evaluation of assigned staff

Qualifications Include

  • Minimum of 5 years professional experience with at least 3 years of leadership experience in a senior manager, executive director or executive team member position
  • Bachelor’s degree is required, MBA or related graduate degree is preferred
  • Proven track record in securing funds and directing donor development, including knowledge of and success in attracting individual donors, securing corporate gifts and navigating foundation resources (organizational turnaround experience is desired)
  • Strong commitment to the CharacterPlus mission
  • An engaging public speaker, equally confident and effective one-on-one with all stakeholders
  • Grant writing experience recommended
  • Experience with local and federal government relations, specifically as they pertain to state or federal funds for education, recommended

Physical Demands:  Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or exerts up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or exerts a negligible amount of force constantly. 

Travel Requirements:  Provide the means and ability to travel within the metropolitan area and the state frequently; ability to travel outside of the state periodically.

Expected Hours of Work:  Normal operating hours are 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.   Some evening or weekend work when necessary.
