World Pediatric Project

Position will assist program staff by providing auxiliary and on-call services for pediatric patients and their guardians; such as assistance with case management, transportation, personal errands, language interpretation when necessary, and doctor’s appointments. This is an entry level, full time position, which requires a fluid 40 hours/week schedule with evening and weekend availability.

Essential Functions (other duties may be assigned):
1. Meet  immediate patient/guardian practical needs as they arise:

a.     Responsible for new family orientation and exit interviews

b.     Coordinate weekly grocery shopping for families in town

c.     Relieve program staff/interns who are covering medical appointments which run past time when they must leave

d.     Cover airport pick-ups and drop-offs when a volunteer is not available

e.     Support guardians during long surgeries going into evening hours or who are staying bedside with children admitted to hospital post-operatively

f.      Pick up prescription medications from pharmacies and deliver to family as well as ensure that they understand medication instructions

g.     Be available to receive and act on important guardian concerns as well as last minute patient needs that come from medical volunteers or hospital staff

h.     Responsible for data entry of patient’s appointments in the database on a weekly basis

i.      Share on-call responsibilities at least once a month, including some holidays

j.      Assist with requesting hospital medical records and properly storing in database and patient files

k.     Assist with completing grant applications to secure hospitality house funding

l.      Keep track of rented wheelchairs and borrowed WPP equipment

m.   Visit housing facilities regularly to assess families’ needs

n.     Collect, organize and distribute donated items, specially winter clothing, when needed

2.     Assist in meeting patient/guardian social and emotional needs:

a.     Organize group or individual recreational activities to build positive relationships between families and add structure to down time (games, crafts, educational activities, group activities)

3.     Maintain daily, timely, and professional oral and written communication with U.S. Referrals team for patient updates and continuity in case management, remaining flexible to respond to ever-changing priorities

4. Participate with program team members in facilitating activities/events for patients and guardians related to donor cultivation and individual patient sponsor support

Non-Essential Functions (performed on an infrequent basis):
Participate with all staff in organization-wide special events
Participate in volunteer speaking engagements to promote organization activities and public awareness of organization’s mission.

Minimum Qualifications:
Candidate must have a high school diploma or equivalent, excellent driving skills and access to a four-door vehicle with valid insurance. Must be able to pass criminal background check and driving record inquiry. Must be fluent in English and Spanish, both written and oral.

Competencies: (General skills and abilities required to perform this job successfully)
The ideal candidate must have: good communication skills and the ability to work with families from diverse cultures and backgrounds. Experience working/volunteering in following areas is preferred: child/family services, medical field, non-profit, or social service agency. Must have the ability to: Drive a vehicle safely while transporting passengers, use city maps or apps to locate unknown destinations, establish rapport and provide a safe and calm environment for children and families, creatively respond to the needs of a culturally diverse client base, assess possible problems and take appropriate actions, make clear and concise written and oral reports, maintain composure under stressful situations, develop a cooperative working environment with staff, supervisors and clients, maintain patient/client privacy standards. Must be comfortable working with varying ages of children (newborn through 21 years old) and comfortable with various medical diagnoses of our patients. Must be able to maintain professional boundaries when working with patients/clients.

Interactions with Others (Internal and External):
Internal: Clients (children and guardians) Program Director, Patient Care Coordinator, Volunteer Director, non-medical volunteers, WPP Volunteer physicians and medical staff, WPP interns.

External: Group housing staff/volunteers, medical and non-medical hospital staff, social workers, miscellaneous social service support staff/volunteers.
