Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, St. Louis Chapter

Position Summary

The Development Director is responsible for presenting opportunities to the wider community to support the mission of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, St. Louis Chapter (AAFA-STL.) The Development Director plans, implements, and manages the organization’s revenue generating activities, including but not exclusive to: fundraising, grant management, corporate partnerships, and individual giving in order to provide the funds that enables the organization’s prescription assistance and school nurse support programming to perform in a high functioning manner and achieve consistently remarkable results.

The Development Director works closely with the Executive Director and Program Director to ensure all work is aligned with the mission and strategic vision of the agency. The Development Director will manage the following committees: Development, Public Awareness, Trivia Night, and Orchid AAFAir.

This position also participates in budget preparation, annual development planning, and monthly reporting.

Events

  • Lead and build effective committees for Trivia Night and Orchid AAFAir Gala.
  • Build long-lasting, organizational based relationships with corporate sponsors.
  • Solicit and organize auction and raffle items from the community.
  • Manage event logistics with support of Executive Director and Administrative Assistant.

Individual Donors

  • Lead Annual Appeal process and engage donors in organization’s mission.
  • Lead moves management process for individual donors with support of Executive Director.
  • Meet with major donors to solicit support.
  • Appropriately thank and steward all donors regardless of gift size.
  • Oversee NAP tax credits.

Grants

  • Research and connect with foundations with a potential for supporting the organization.
  • Write and submit all grants in a timely manner to ensure continued support.
  • Work with Program Department to ensure requests meet organizational and community needs.
  • Ensure open lines of communications with grantors, completes all reporting on time and thoroughly.
  • Track restricted funding to ensure spending is in line with donor intent.

Other

  • Assist Executive Director in setting annual budget.
  • Remain present in the community through networking events, coalition meetings, and one-on-one meetings with partners and donors.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Engaging personality and comfort with meeting new people to share the mission in large groups and one-on-one meetings.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of research and the ability to identify funding opportunities.
  • Highly organized with the ability to implement systems, able to effectively work under pressure, and produce a quality work product within tight time constraints.
  • Personal life experience or knowledge of asthma, allergies, or food allergies.
  • Experience as a volunteer and donor for a nonprofit organization.
  • Knowledge of St. Louis philanthropic community and understanding of institutional racism’s effect on health outcomes.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • 2+ years experience in development, grant writing, event planning, and solicitation of major gifts.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Google for Nonprofits, and Bloomerang database donor software or similar products.

Compensation

  • Starting salary $50,000/year.
  • AAFA-STL pays 70% of health, dental, vision and short term disability insurance and matches up to 3% of annual salary in a Simple IRA. Life and AD&D Insurance provided.
  • Employees accrue up to 12 days per year in vacation and 12 days of sick leave in their first year of employment plus two floating holidays along with limited schedule between Christmas and New Years.
  • Average of 40 hours per week is expected. Flexible scheduling is offered. Office is typically closed on Friday afternoons.
