Department Name/Job Location:  This position is in the Department of Communications.  The position is located at Hillman Hall.  This position is for the Danforth Campus.


The Brown School at Washington University comprises a top-ranked master of social work, innovative maser of public health and a growing master of social policy program, in additional to two PhD programs and more than 12 faculty-led research centers. The School’s mission and vision are closely aligned with the advancement of social justice and equity. Through leadership in the area of creative strategy, graphic design and production, this individual helps the School’s communications team elevate and promote the School’s programs, research, faculty, alumni, students and events to both internal and external audiences.

The senior designer is responsible for visual concept, design, layout, artwork, production and creative supervision of Brown School print and electronic marketing materials assigned. In addition, this role collaborates closely with the director of communications, communications manager, digital content specialist and outside vendors. This individual will need to understand and find creative, design-oriented solutions to communications challenges and opportunities, including the visual representation of technical or complex information for consumption by lay audiences. This individual will help ensure a consistent quality in terms of look, feel, brand standards, and voice/message throughout the School’s communications.

This individual also makes substantive contributions to discussions about project management, operations and strategy.  They will play a key role in advancing the internal capabilities of faculty, staff and students to more effectively present and communicate their work in an on-brand, visual way through training and consultation.


  1. Creative Concepting, Graphic Design, and Art Direction

Works with faculty and staff to identify, plan, design, and produce a variety of visually compelling materials and experiences including: publications and reports; presentations; advertising; marketing; fundraising, and event collateral; invitations and programs; environmental and digital signage; exhibits, displays and backdrops; center branding; websites; promotional and research posters; and maps, charts and graphs.

  • Develops and executes creative, image-enhancing artwork and layouts
  • Collaborates with communications team on copy, strategy, timeline and budget, to ensure internal client expectations are met
  • Manages each project from concept through design and production
  • Captures, creates, or manipulates graphic images, photos, flow charts, and diagrams for inclusion in publications, reports, fact sheets, policy briefs, brochures, advertisements, presentations, posters, web, etc.
  • Conceptualize designs for web projects; prepares graphic and photographic files as well as typographic specifications for web design; selects color palettes
  • Researches, bids, designs, orders, and proofs branded promotional items and apparel
  • Maintains current information and provides counsel on paper availability, postal regulations, digital technology and standards, and other information; which may affect assigned marketing materials
  • Designs new website skins as requested; creates layered art files and notes to aid programmer in production; coordinates with programmer on web styles
  • Optimizes graphics for external website, intranet, and electronic communications
  • Management of all digital assets
  1. Production
  • Establishes and meets production schedules and assignments
  • Coordinates with outside freelance designers and photographers, if needed, to establish and meet production schedules
  • Gathers estimates from vendors that, depending on the project and client need, may range from the Brown School’s internal production center to full-color press
  • Prepares files for press, routes and approves proofs, conducts press checks
  • Specifies paper and ink combinations; prepares electronic files for layout and print, including multi-color artwork; prepares illustrations and drawings
  • Serves as the department’s liaison to the School’s Service Center, which offers internal production capabilities
  1. Tools and Trainings
  • Builds the capacity of Brown School faculty, staff, and students by proactively identifying and developing a range of tools and templates to support routine, day-to-day communications activities
  • Serves as technical graphics expert in consultation with internal clients
  • Identifies, creates, and holds trainings for faculty, staff and students as needed to support the use of the templates and other best practices as it relates to visual display of information
  • Creation of templates for use by faculty, staff, and students and research centers
  • Maintains and revises school style guide
  • Advises internal clients, students, and vendors on proper branding, template, and style guide usage
  • Contributes to discussions and content related to broader curricular goals in the area of visual display of information
  • Manages content and advances the use and functionality of the Communications Tool kit, a communication resource area on the School’s intranet
  1. Photography and Video
  • Art directs photo and video shoots as needed
  • Retouches photography for printed and electronic materials; prepares photographic suggestions; scan, crop, and size photographs
  • Collaborate with video editors to provide direction on branding and look
  1. Perform other duties as assigned


  • Bachelor’s degree and three years of experience in graphic design or related field
  • Creative, self-starter
  • Demonstrated excellence in graphic design skills and a high degree of innovation through the professional portfolio
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software suite including Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, and Excel
  • Knowledge and experience with the print production process (pre-flighting files, etc.)
  • Ability to work with a range of production facilities from in-house production services to full color presses, as well as programmers and other digital specialists
  • Ability to quickly learn and integrate new tools and technologies to meet emerging needs
  • Experience in designing visual experiences (e.g. special events, exhibits, wayfinding, etc.)


  • At least five years of experience
  • Ability to work in both PC and Mac (Note: This is PC environment, but a MAC can be provided)
  • Experience in visual presentation of data
  • Proven ability to work within organization brand standards, as well as the ability to develop new standards as needed
  • Exacting attention to detail
  • Excellent analytical thinking and creative problem solving skills for visual information design
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, the ability to work with individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds; collaborative

Salary Range:  The hiring range for this position is $47,151 – $61,289 annually.
