Controller Position Overview
Principal Objective:
BlueSummit Consulting is conducting a search on behalf of our client, a $20M+ human social services organization, for a full-time Controller to join the client’s team. This senior level financial management position is responsible for overseeing and managing the accounting processes and accounting personnel for the organization.
Core Responsibilities:
· Prepare and/or review financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements and cash flow statements, to provide accurate and timely financial information to management and stakeholders.
· Oversee the preparation and review of account reconciliations, including bank accounts, accounts payable and accounts receivable, to ensure accurate financial records; prepare more complex reconciliations, as appropriate.
· Responsible for the management and oversight, as well as hands-on execution of certain aspects, of the month-end, quarterly and year-end closing processes, including the review and approval of journal entries and accruals.
· Responsible for the management and oversight of financial systems and software, making recommendations for improvements or upgrades as needed
· Manage mission-related funds and Coordinate with the Director of Program Services to ensure funds are used for donors’ purposes.
· Oversee the preparation for, management and coordination of all external audits, working closely with auditors and the Audit Committee to prepare necessary documentation and resolve any audit issues.
· Develop, establish and maintain internal controls to safeguard the organization’s assets and ensure compliance with financial regulations and accounting standards.
· Drive the budgeting and forecasting processes, collaborating with various departments to ensure financial goals are met; assist with interim budget reviews.
· Assist in monitoring cash flow and work with senior management to optimize cash resources to meet the organization’s financial obligations.
· The Controller reports to the Fractional CFO with a dotted line to the Executive Director, and is responsible for and provides guidance, leadership, and training to the accounting team, which is comprised of a team of five resources responsible for transactional and general accounting.
· Ensure timely bank deposits.
· Maintain valid bank signature cards for the Executive Director, Finance Committee and Board Executive Committee members.
· Integrate Point of Sale (POS) information from retail operations and Donation Management information into the accounting systems while minimizing the need for manual accounting entries.
· Integrate related party accounting information into the organization’s consolidated financial statements.
· Contribute to the development and execution of the organization’s financial strategy, working with senior management to identify opportunities for revenue enhancement and cost savings.
· Responsible for developing and maintaining accounting policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with professional standards, state and federal regulatory requirements.
· Assist in presenting financial reporting and potential risk areas to senior management and board members.
· Ensure compliance with all tax regulations and oversee the preparation and filling of tax returns (Form 990, 5500, 1099s, and W-2s) by outside professional services firms.
Qualifications of a Successful Candidate:
· Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field of study with a minimum of 8 years’ experience or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
· Knowledge of and strict adherence to GAAP reporting procedures.
· CPA or equivalent experience required.
· Experience in the non-profit sector and/or retail industry is strongly preferred.
· QuickBooks experience is strongly preferred.
