Position: Reporting directly to the President and CEO, the primary role of the Vice President and Chief Communications Officer (VP/CCO) is to advance Nine PBS’s visibility and brand by growing audiences and support. The VP/CCO is responsible for telling the Nine PBS story through institutional communications, branding, promotions, and relationships.

The VP/CCO must be a dynamic and strategic leader that partners with the CEO and executive leadership in support of the mission and strategic vision of the organization. This individual must possess a high degree of initiative, judgment, and decision-making.

The VP/CCO will lead the strategic direction and execution of Nine’s brand, communications, and creative vision. This includes developing and applying comprehensive, integrated strategies that align with strategic business goals and priorities. The VP/CCO will serve as a brand steward, communicating our value proposition by ensuring our brand is visible and advances our identity, values, and purpose across the St. Louis region.

Primary Responsibilities: The following primary responsibilities are essential to meeting the expectations of this position. This is not an exhaustive list and areas of focus may fluctuate between the primary and secondary responsibilities, as needed. The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate success in these areas at other organizations and speak about what exceeding expectations has looked like throughout their career.

·         Think and act creatively to develop and lead integrated communication and marketing strategies that grow audience, increase support, strengthen and increase brand awareness.

·         Optimize multi-platform marketing and communications efforts to reach target audiences effectively.

·         Be a leader on the Nine PBS executive team by contributing to and advancing the organization’s strategic direction.

·         Lead, motivate, support, and proactively ensure strategic direction for the communications team so they produce the highest level of service for Nine PBS and its audiences.

·         Foster an environment of inclusivity and opportunity that includes mentorship and professional development.

·         Set organizational voice/messaging/branding standards and ensure they are used consistently across internal and external stakeholders to communicate using “one voice”.

·         Maximize strategic sponsorships and collaborations with external agencies, vendors and influencers to amplify brand reach and awareness.

·         Oversee event strategy and implementation.

·         Forecast and manage annual marketing budgets and updates, while proactively reporting progress against key performance indicators.

·         Develop and approve budgets and creative executions for owned, earned, trade, and paid media campaigns.

·         Know and report about what works by tracking and analyzing results of efforts to help inform future work and campaigns.

·         Maintain and grow key relationships with public media colleagues, partners, vendors, and volunteers.

·         Oversee promotions and branding efforts for station programs and initiatives.

Secondary Responsibilities: These are additional activities that are expected to be performed with this position.

·         Lead team meetings to set strategies and priorities.

·         Inspire a culture of creativity and accountability.

·         Foster a creative and productive work environment.

·         Engage in succession planning and identify/develop high performing staff for future roles.

·         Collaborate with members of the executive management team and other organizational leaders to identify and implement appropriate operational strategies.

·         Understand industry-wide shifts and changes to determine timely calibration/recalibration for Nine PBS.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree required, with at least 10-15 years of experience in marketing, communications, branding or other related fields. Proficient in Excel, PowerPoint, Word and other MS Office applications (i.e., Adobe Creative Suite).

Hybrid Schedule: This position is eligible for a hybrid schedule, typically working up to three days virtually each week. Must attend executive team meetings in-person unless given advanced approval from President & CEO. In addition, on-site work is expected for one-on-one meetings with the CEO (when appropriate), and attendance at Board meetings and key events. Ability and willingness to work a varied schedule including evenings and weekends. Ability for some travel.
