Job Title: Housing Coordinator

Location: St. Louis, MO

Reports to: Executive Director

Position Type: Part-Time (20 hours per week)

Compensation: $1,666/month, $20,000/year

Job Summary

The Refugee Resettlement Housing Coordinator at Welcome Neighbor STL is responsible for securing safe, sanitary, affordable, and dignified housing for newly arriving refugee families and individuals in St. Louis. The coordinator works with local property owners, landlords, real estate agents, and resettlement staff to ensure families are placed in homes that foster stability and community integration. It is important that refugees be placed close to public transportation, schools, shopping, and jobs. The role is vital in supporting Welcome Neighbor STL’s mission to help refugees establish new lives with a focus on housing as the cornerstone of their transition to self-sufficiency.

Key Responsibilities

Housing Acquisition and Placement:
Identify, secure, and prepare suitable housing options for incoming refugees in St. Louis.
Maintain and grow relationships with landlords, property managers, and real estate agents to secure consistent housing availability.
Coordinate all logistics related to securing housing, including lease agreements, utility setups, and initial move-in procedures.
Conduct inspections to ensure that housing meets safety, health, and livability standards, in alignment with organizational expectations.
Coordinate safety orientations.

Collaboration with the Staff Team:
Work closely with the Welcome Neighbor STL team to understand the housing needs of arriving families.
Coordinate with volunteers and partners to ensure homes are furnished and equipped with essential household items.
Collaborate on the preparation and delivery of home setups, ensuring all aspects of a safe and welcoming environment are addressed.

Landlord Relations and Education:
Serve as the main point of contact for landlords and housing providers, fostering open communication and addressing any concerns that arise.
Provide education and resources to landlords on working with refugee populations, addressing common concerns, and navigating cultural differences.
Advocate for fair rental practices, ensuring refugees have equitable access to housing opportunities and rental agreements.

Community Outreach and Housing Resources:
Engage with local affordable housing programs, nonprofits, and city housing initiatives to expand options for refugee families.
Build a network of community resources, including emergency rental assistance programs, to support refugee households.
Maintain a housing resource database for internal and external use, ensuring updated information is accessible to all resettlement staff.

Documentation and Reporting:
Maintain detailed housing placement records, landlord contacts, lease agreements, and housing-related case notes.
Track housing outcomes and create reports for internal evaluation and reporting to external stakeholders.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in social work, public administration, real estate, or a related field (preferred but not required).
Previous experience in housing coordination, property management, refugee resettlement, or social services in the St. Louis area.
Knowledge of St. Louis housing policies, affordable housing programs, and tenant rights.
Experience working with immigrants, refugees, or culturally diverse populations in a nonprofit or community setting.
Strong organizational and communication skills.
Ability to build and sustain relationships with landlords, housing providers, and community partners.
Excellent negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
Familiarity with local housing regulations and tenant rights.
Familiarity with using Google Drive applications (ex. Sheets, docs, calendar)
Ability to use technology for virtual communication, data tracking, and reporting.
Multilingual abilities (Arabic, Dari, Pashto) are a plus.

Other Requirements

Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for site visits.
Knowledge of or willingness to learn about local St. Louis refugee communities and housing market trends.
