JOB DESCRIPTION 

Position Title: Director of Development 
Department: Leadership
Location: Angels’ Arms Headquarters, St. Louis County
Reports To: President, Board of Directors
Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (with occasional evenings and weekends as needed)
FLSA Status: Exempt
Supervises: Events & Development Team

Job Summary:

The Director of Development is a key senior leadership role responsible for developing and executing comprehensive fundraising, marketing, and communication strategies that raise awareness and generate financial support for Angels’ Arms. This individual will lead efforts in donor engagement, grant writing, planned giving, event planning, and overall fundraising strategy. In addition, the Director will work closely with the Board of Directors, donors, volunteers, and other departments to ensure an integrated approach to advancing the organization’s mission and goals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Fundraising Strategy & Execution:
Develop and implement a multi-channel fundraising strategy that includes major gifts, annual giving, planned giving, grants, corporate sponsorships, and special events. Set annual and long-term fundraising goals that align with the organization’s strategic objectives.

Donor Relations & Stewardship:
Partner with the Founder/Community Resource Officer to cultivate and maintain strong relationships with existing donors, sponsors, and community partners. Identify and engage new donors and funding sources, ensuring a positive and consistent donor experience, recognition, and engagement.

Grants Management:
Research, identify, and apply for grants that align with organizational programs and initiatives. Oversee the grant application process, including writing proposals, managing submissions, and ensuring timely reporting.

Marketing & Communications:
Collaborate with the Leadership Team to develop and execute marketing and communications plans that raise awareness of the organization’s mission, programs, and fundraising initiatives. Work closely with marketing partners, staff, volunteers, and the Board to create compelling content for social media, newsletters, websites, and other digital platforms.

Event Planning & Management:
Lead the planning and execution of fundraising events such as galas, donor appreciation events, and community engagement activities. Ensure all events meet or exceed established fundraising goals, and align with the organization’s mission and values. Manage event budgets, timelines, and logistics.

Planned Giving & Major Gifts:
Develop and implement strategies for soliciting major gifts and planned giving. Manage a portfolio of major gift prospects and donors, ensuring regular communication and stewardship.

Team Leadership & Development:
Supervise and mentor a dynamic team of development professionals. Foster a collaborative, results-driven environment and provide ongoing feedback, performance evaluations, and professional development opportunities to ensure the success of the team.

Board Engagement & Reporting:
Collaborate closely with the Board of Directors and Development Committee to engage them in fundraising efforts. Provide regular updates on progress toward fundraising goals and assist Board members with donor cultivation and solicitation.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Director of Operations, Founder/Community Resource Officer, and other key staff to ensure consistent and integrated messaging across all communications.
  • Represent Angels’ Arms at public events, networking functions, and speaking engagements to enhance visibility and reputation.
  • Manage the donor database to maintain accurate records of donor interactions, giving history, and communications.
  • Oversee the development department budget, ensuring efficient use of resources and alignment with organizational goals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to further support the mission and success of Angels’ Arms.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of 7 years of experience in fundraising, planned giving, and nonprofit management, and team leadership with a proven track record in securing major gifts and grants.
  • Leadership: Demonstrated ability to lead and inspire a high-performing team, fostering a collaborative environment.
  • Communication Skills: Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills, with the ability to engage stakeholders at all levels.
  • Fundraising Expertise: Strong knowledge of fundraising best practices, tax planning principles, and charitable giving techniques.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in donor management software and marketing tools.
  • Organizational Skills: Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines.
  • Strategic Thinking: Strong analytical, strategic planning, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Personal Integrity: High level of personal integrity, professionalism, and passion for the mission of Angels’ Arms.
  • Clearances: Able to pass all background checks.

Compensation:

  • Salary: $85,000 – $105,000 (based on experience and qualifications)
  • Benefits: Paid time off (PTO), paid holidays, and partial health insurance coverage.
