Burns Recovered

Midwest Children’s Burn Camp (MCBC) is a week-long overnight program in Missouri run by Burns Recovered for burn and smoke inhalation survivors between the ages of six (6) and seventeen (17) years old.  MCBC focuses on increasing self-esteem, self-confidence, and connectedness among burn survivors as well as between burn survivors and community members

Position Summary:

The Camp Director will be responsible for executing the vision and mission of Burns Recovered for Midwest Children’s Burn Camp (MCBC), according to established policies and procedures. The Camp Director will embody the positive, forward-thinking and inclusive culture of the camp and the organization.  The Camp Director’s focus will be on volunteer recruitment, training and oversight, and day-to-day operations during camp.  The Camp Director is supported by the Program Director and the resources of the Burns Recovered office.  An ideal candidate for this position will be a resident of either Missouri or eastern Kansas and able to travel to the Burns Recovered office in St. Louis as necessary.

Essential Job Functions:

Senior Staff and Volunteer Counselor Oversight:

  • Manage the recruitment, hiring, and onboarding process for new volunteers in collaboration with the Program Director and Camp Senior Staff.
  • Supervise the volunteer Senior Staff, specifically ensuring that their teams are performing at the highest level during the week of camp.
  • Perform annual evaluations of Senior Staff.
  • Oversee the preparation and implementation of a pre-camp orientation and in-service training for seasonal volunteers.
  • Act as final decision-maker regarding any disciplinary action taken against a camp volunteer, up to and including dismissal from camp.

Program Development and Operations

  • Support the Activities Director in designing and implementing the weekly camp schedule.
  • Schedule and lead monthly Senior Staff meetings during the camp off-season to prepare for the upcoming season.
  • Collaborate with the Program Director to ensure all program operations comply with American Camp Association Accreditation Standards.
  • Develop and execute a camp budget in collaboration with the Program Director.
  • Ensure smooth operation of day-to-day camp activities by:

– Leading daily staff meetings.

– Maintaining a visible presence to campers and volunteers throughout camp.

– Participating as a member of the camp staff to deliver and supervise evening programs and other all-camp activities and functions.

Camp Safety and Welfare

  • Support Cabin Counselors and Group Leaders in identifying and addressing camper-related issues in a timely manner, up to and including dismissal or early departure from camp.
  • Ensure that camp policies and procedures (safety, relationships, medical, emergency response) are well understood and applied in an equitable manner.
  • Serve as primary point of contact for parents and guardians during the week of camp.
  • Serve as point of contact/liaison for external media interactions during camp.

  • Recognize and consider the needs of others in daily interactions and decision-making.
  • Use and model appropriate self-care practices for maintaining overall wellness in a fast-paced environment.
  • Promote emotional safety for campers and staff by maintaining an environment of encouragement and respect.
  • Address conflict in an open, direct manner.

Relationships:

The Camp Director will interact with all volunteers of Burns Recovered – many of whom return from year to year – paid staff (regardless of organization), and other partner organizations and caregivers of campers with the intention of cooperation, mutual respect, policy adherence, and high-quality care for the campers.  The Camp Director shall collaborate with the Program Director for high-level decisions and policy changes/corrections.

Position Requirements and Preferences:

  • Successful navigation of the pre-employment process and clean background check required.
  • Three (3) years of work or volunteer experience in youth services or youth-oriented camp programs required.  (Five (5) years or greater preferred.)
  • Leadership experience in organized camping, summer camp, or youth counseling preferred.
  • Supervisory experience of individuals or teams in a work or volunteer setting required.
  • Valid driver’s license preferred (any suspensions, revocations, or high-risk insurance will be considered on a case-by-case basis).

Time Commitment:

  • The camp planning season begins in January and ends in December.  Initially, the Camp Director can expect to spend 2-3 hours weekly working on camp planning. The time commitment will increase to 4-5 hours weekly in the month of July and will decrease to 1-2 hours weekly in August and September.
  • Hours may be in-person or virtual and are determined by the Camp Director in collaboration with the Program Manager.  The Camp Director will need to be available some evenings for camp planning meetings and collaboration with paid and volunteer staff.
  • Required attendance at the annual three-day American Camp Association conference in February one or two other people (registration, travel, and lodging covered by Burns Recovered).
  • Required attendance at pre-camp training weekend (May 16th to May 18th, 2025) and all days of the camp session (July 26th – August 3rd, 2025).

Midwest Children’s Burn Camp (MCBC) is a program of Burns Recovered and provides young people who have experienced burn and smoke inhalation injury with an opportunity to face social and physical challenges among their peers in an accepting setting.  Participating in MCBC has been shown to increase a young person’s self-esteem, self-confidence, and feeling of connectedness to others.  Except for the Program Director and Camp Director, all camp personnel are volunteers who are dedicated to the mission of the camp.
