About AAO:  

The AAO is a professional association of educationally qualified orthodontic specialists dedicated to ethically advancing the art and science of orthodontics, improving the health of the public by promoting quality orthodontic care, and supporting the practice of orthodontics. The AAO is comprised of more than 19,000 members in the United States, Canada and abroad. The specialty of orthodontics is the oldest and largest dental specialty recognized by the American Dental Association.

Position Summary:

The Social Media Strategist is a new and key position for the American Association of Orthodontists. The primary goal of the position is to cultivate brand loyalty among all orthodontic industry stakeholders through community engagement. The position will develop and execute revolutionary strategies to build and manage a strong online presence and communities for the AAO on social media platforms, focusing on engaging users and fostering conversations through thoughtful content and community interactions. This position reports to the Director of Marketing.

Essential Functions:

Key responsibilities of the Social Media Strategist:

·       Develop revolutionary social media strategy and execution plans:

Develop and continuously improve an industry-facing social media strategy and execution plans with the goal of cultivating fierce brand loyalty among orthodontists, orthodontic residency programs and suppliers.

·       Identifying target audiences:

Define target audiences considering demographics, motivators, needs and interests to inform the social media strategy, to inform content calendar and to tailor content and engagement tactics accordingly.

·       Content creation and curation:

Develop high-quality content and solicit member-generated content that resonates with the specific target audience, including but not limited to social copy, post graphics, videos, infographics, polls, how to guides, behind the scenes content, testimonials, and live streams, while also curating relevant content from other sources.

·       Community engagement:

Actively participate in conversations, respond to comments and messages promptly, and initiate discussions to keep the communities lively.

·       Social listening and monitoring:

Track online conversations related to the AAO, identify key influencers, and respond to both positive and negative feedback.

·       Trend analysis:

Stay up to date with emerging social media trends and incorporating them into the social media strategy to stay relevant.

·       Analytics and reporting:

Measure the performance of engagement efforts using social media analytics to identify areas for improvement and demonstrate ROI.

Required Skills

·       Proven expertise developing and implementing groundbreaking social media strategy using Instagram, Facebook, X, TikTok and LinkedIn

·       Experience managing multiple social media channels with end-to-end responsibility

·       Strong communication and interpersonal skills

·       Hands-on content creation and writing abilities

·       Excellent data analysis and reporting skills

·       Ability to build relationships with internal teams, industry influencers, and members to foster a sense of community

·       Works with a strong sense of ownership and sense of urgency

Education and/or Experience:

·       Bachelor’s degree in marketing or related field

·       Minimum seven years of social media experience with at least three years’ experience in social media strategy to build loyalty.

·       Experience creating content, social media copywriting, graphic designs, and video editing experience.

·       Experience using a social media management platform to manage and monitor social media accounts, schedule content and actively listen throughout social for brand, competitor, keyword, and hashtag mentions.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Working Conditions and Physical Demands: Sedentary inside office work with limited exposure to weather conditions. Occasional travel required, typically one trip annually of 5-8 days duration. Requires ability to lift, pack and unpack boxes of supplies. Also requires ability to be on one’s feet for long periods (10-hour days) during an annual conference at a hotel or convention center facility.
