Jazz St. Louis (JSL) is a nationally recognized nonprofit organization with a mission to advance the uniquely American art of jazz through performance, education, and community engagement. Founded in 1995, JSL operates from the Harold & Dorothy Steward Center for Jazz in St. Louis’ Grand Center Arts District and presents over 170 nights of music annually, featuring world-renowned artists such as Wynton Marsalis, Christian McBride, and Robert Glasper.

In addition to performances, JSL leads innovative education and community programs—including JazzU, Jazz Academy, Jazz for Our Schools, and Artist Residencies—that serve thousands of students and schools at no cost. Its community engagement efforts range from jazz-themed early childhood programs to public lectures, concerts, and a regional radio broadcast, The Next Set: Live from Jazz St. Louis.

The Development Associate plays a key role on a dedicated and collaborative team, reporting to the Development Director, and helping ensure the continued growth and sustainability of Jazz St. Louis’ mission-driven work.

POSITION SUMMARY

Jazz St. Louis (JSL) offers an excellent opportunity for a Development professional who is passionate about the arts and education, is excited to grow and develop new skills, and is interested in building on prior experience in the fundraising profession to serve as our Development Associate. Working with the Director of Development, President & CEO, and JSL staff, the Development Associate will support the efforts of the Development team to develop and maintain the financial and donor resources necessary to support the ongoing growth of this vibrant organization through annual fundraising efforts.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Plan and execute the JSL Annual Fund, including writing appeals, tracking the appeals in the database, and collaborating with members of the JSL team to create and design content.
• Plan and execute online giving initiatives, including maintaining the online giving pages, serving as the primary contact for Give STL Day, and coordinating digital and social media communications for donations.
• Manage a portfolio of donors, including tribute and memorial donors, and in-kind donors. Assist with new grant opportunities as needed.
• Manage donor files, perform gift data entry and routine monthly processes, ensuring that records and the database are maintained accurately.
• Manage Development mail/correspondence, reconcile gifts with Accounting, and maintain gift documentation for the Development team, including online gift portals such as Network for Good, NPO/YourCause, and Amazon Smile.
•  Oversee donor communications and stewardship processes, including timely preparation and distribution of acknowledgment letters, gift receipts, tributes, and memorial notices. Serve as the Tessitura database manager, ensuring accurate tracking of donor activity and coordinating the fulfillment of benefits for special event and performance sponsorships.
• Manage a pledge reminder process in coordination with Accounting.
• Coordinate Development and Marketing efforts by assisting the Marketing Department with copywriting, editing, and content development around all Development efforts.
• Provide calendar management for the Development Team, including setting meetings and booking spaces for events.
• Attend concert activities, special events, and other functions. Schedule flexibility, including some weekends and evening availability, is required.
• Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

• Bachelor’s degree and/or relevant experience.
• A minimum of three (3) years development experience
• Comparable, successful experience in Development in arts and/or educational organizations.
• Collaborative personality and strong interpersonal skills to promote effective relationship-building with volunteers, staff, board members, and community partners.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Must work well in a fast-paced environment.
• Initiative and problem-solving skills are needed.

Preferred

• Evidence of progressive Development experience
• Demonstrated competence with Tessitura Network software.

COMPENSATION

The Development Associate position is full-time salaried with competitive benefits and a salary range between $45K and $55K annually.
