Food Outreach

Agency Summary:
Food Outreach is the only St. Louis area organization and non-profit whose mission is to provide nutritional support to enhance the quality of life of men, women, and children living with HIV or cancer. Food Outreach provides a combination of nutritionally supportive services through Medically Tailored Meals and groceries, Medical Nutrition Therapy, and nutrition education.

Team Compensation:

Position Overview:
We are looking for an energetic, forward-thinking Food Service Manager to lead our Food Is Medicine Team. In this pivotal role, you will oversee the planning, coordination, and execution of food service operations within the organization. This role ensures that all meals meet established nutritional standards, regulatory requirements, and client expectations. This position will supervise two chefs, manage inventory, maintain compliance with sanitation and safety regulations, and collaborate with key stakeholders to continuously improve food service operations. This is a full-time, in-person, exempt position, governed by our standard personnel policies for all staff.

Essential Functions
– Manage and supervise food service operations, including meal planning, preparation, presentation, and delivery.
– Hire, train, schedule, and evaluate food service staff.
– Monitor food quality, portion control, and presentation to ensure consistent service standards.
– Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal food safety and sanitation regulations in addition to compliance and ongoing reporting with government agencies and Food Outreach policy.
– Oversee inventory control, purchasing, and cost management for the kitchen to stay within budget.
– Maintain accurate records of food production, employee performance, and regulatory compliance.
– Collaborate locally and nationally with FIMC partners to create recipes, policies, and operational protocols.
– Lead annual staff training on food safety and sanitation.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
– Strong understanding of food handling standards (HACCP, ServSafe, FDA Food Code, FIMC)
– Understanding of meal planning, portion control, and production schedules.
– Knowledge of inventory management and food cost analysis.
– Ability to lead and motivate a diverse team of food service staff and volunteers.
– Ability to manage multiple priorities, shifts, and service lines efficiently.
– Capable of identifying and resolving operational issues quickly and effectively.
– Familiarity with Food Is Medicine programs, food systems management, recipe creation, and menu development.
– Familiarity with commercial kitchen equipment.
– Ability to assist in the kitchen when needed for client food production or recipe testing.
– Familiarity with nutritional management for chronic conditions, including HIV and cancer.
– Clear communicator both internally and publicly; adept at explaining complex policies.
– Proven ability to manage complex programs, solve root-cause issues, and foster program growth.
– Proficient in monitoring and assessing the performance of self and team to drive organizational excellence

Qualifications:
The following qualifications are required for the position of Food Service Manager:
– Registered Dietitian with experience in food service.
– One to three years of experience in food service production or operations
– Proven experience in personnel and team leadership within food production settings
– Deep alignment with the mission and values of Food Outreach and the national Food Is Medicine Coalition
– Current ServSafe Manager Certification—or willingness to obtain it within two weeks of hire (at the agency’s expense)
– Documentation of Hepatitis A vaccination
– Flexibility to take on evolving responsibilities as organizational needs shift
– Availability for flexible hours, including periodic evenings and weekends

The following qualifications are preferred for the position of Food Service Manager:
– Valid driver’s license
– Availability for occasional local and national travel
– Comfort working at a computer workstation for extended periods
– Ability to move or transfer food containers weighing up to 20 lbs (optional but helpful)

Line of Authority
This position reports to the Director of Operations. This position directly manages the head chef and assistant chef.
