About the Crime Victim Center
The Crime Victim Center (CVC) of St. Louis is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering individuals impacted by crime to move from crisis to resilience. Founded in 1972 as the first victim service agency in the United States serving all victims of crime, CVC provides free advocacy, counseling, legal assistance, resources, and community engagement for survivors and their families throughout the St. Louis region. Our mission is to give victims a voice and support their journey toward healing.
Position Summary
The Executive Director (ED) serves as the chief executive officer of CVC and is responsible for overall strategic leadership, operational oversight, financial sustainability, community partnerships, fundraising, and grant development and management. The ED will work collaboratively with the Board of Directors, staff, volunteers, and key stakeholders to advance the mission, increase organizational impact, and strengthen relationships across sectors. This position reports directly to the Board of Directors.
This role requires a dynamic leader with a proven track record of building strong external relationships, securing philanthropic support, developing and managing grants, and guiding a nonprofit organization toward long-term sustainability.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Strategic Vision
Provide visionary leadership and direction for CVC in partnership with the Board of Directors.
Implement and monitor strategic plans that align with the organization’s mission and community needs.
Foster a culture of excellence, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Responsible for the organization’s visibility in the community and managing public relations.
Fundraising & Resource Development
Lead the creation and execution of a diversified fundraising strategy that includes individual giving, major gifts, corporate sponsorships, special events, planned giving, and other philanthropic initiatives.
Oversee and personally engage in donor cultivation, stewardship, and retention.
Serve as the primary liaison with major donors, partners, funders, and community supporters.
Grant Development & Management
Assist the Director of Grants with research, budget, and submission of competitive grant proposals to foundations, corporations, and government agencies.
Manage grant deliverables, ensure compliance with funder requirements, and oversee timely reporting.
Build and maintain relationships with grant program officers and institutional funders.
Organizational Operations
Oversee daily operations and ensure program effectiveness, quality, and adherence to trauma-informed practices.
Ensure organizational compliance with all legal, regulatory, and ethical standards.
Work with staff leadership to recruit, retain, and develop a high-performing team.
Communicate with the Board on the agency’s condition and recommend any changes to improve overall operations.
Responsible for the fiscal integrity of the CVC, including the submission of a proposed annual budget and monthly financial reporting that reflect the organization’s financial condition.
Fiscal management that anticipates operating within the approved budget, ensuring maximum resource utilization, and maintaining the organization in a positive financial position.
Board Collaboration & Governance
Support the Board of Directors in governance, strategic planning, and fundraising efforts.
Provide regular reports on organizational performance, financials, fundraising, and strategic initiatives.
Community Engagement & Advocacy
Represent CVC as a spokesperson and ambassador within the community, media, and public forums.
Cultivate partnerships with government agencies, nonprofits, legal and health systems, and community groups to strengthen service delivery and advocacy.
Promote awareness of CVC’s mission, services, and impact.
Qualifications
Required:
Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, public administration, social services, or related field (advanced degree preferred).
Proven experience (5+ years) in nonprofit leadership, including fundraising, relationship building, and grant development & management.
Demonstrated success in securing funding from diverse revenue streams (individuals, foundations, corporate, events).
Strong communication, interpersonal, and public speaking skills.
Ability to build and sustain strategic partnerships and community collaborations.
Working knowledge of non-profit fiscal management, including sound accounting practices, grant reporting, and budgeting; experience managing a budget of at least $1M preferred.
Preferred:
Experience leading trauma-informed or victim-serving organizations.
Understanding of the criminal justice system, victim rights, and advocacy frameworks.
Experience working with boards and volunteers.
