Laumeier Sculpture Park engages communities through art and nature to inspire curiosity, foster creativity, and promote social connection for all. Our nonprofit museum located in a public green space showcases and stewards a renowned art collection, exhibitions, enriching education programs, and beloved public events.

Organization Overview 

Laumeier Sculpture Park, one of the first and largest sculpture parks in the country, is an internationally recognized, nonprofit arts organization that is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums and operates in partnership with St. Louis County Parks. Laumeier presents more than 70 works of large-scale outdoor sculpture in a 94-acre park that is free and open daily. Laumeier serves approximately 360,000 visitors of all ages each year with a sculpture collection, temporary exhibitions, education programs, public events, and more. The park is located in Sunset Hills in St. Louis County, Missouri.

Position Overview 

The Director of Events is a full-time, exempt position reporting directly to the Executive Director. As a key member of Laumeier Sculpture Park’s leadership team, the Director of Events provides the strategic vision, leadership, and oversight for the organization’s comprehensive event portfolio. This revenue-generating department plays a critical role in advancing Laumeier’s mission while driving both earned and contributed income through exceptional public programs, fundraising events, and private rentals.

The Director of Events will work closely with the ED to set the vision, direction and goals for the events department. The Director of Events has responsibility for the planning and execution of events that meet or exceed goals. This individual ensures that every event reflects Laumeier’s mission, enhances the visitor experience, strengthens community engagement, and contributes to the organization’s long-term financial sustainability.

Working collaboratively across the organization, the Director of Events supervises the Special Events Manager and Private Events Manager, and partners closely with colleagues in Development, Marketing, Finance, Education, Curatorial, and Operations. The Director also cultivates strategic relationships with St. Louis County Parks and Recreation, sponsors, vendors, artists, community organizations, and other key partners to ensure the successful execution and continued evolution of Laumeier’s event portfolio.

Beyond execution, the Director of Events is responsible for shaping the future of Laumeier’s events program by identifying emerging trends, evaluating organizational performance, developing innovative event concepts, and creating new opportunities to expand audience engagement, community partnerships, and both earned and contributed revenue. This position requires a visionary leader who can think strategically, inspire collaboration, and translate bold ideas into exceptional experiences that position Laumeier as a premier destination for arts, culture, and community events.

Duties + Responsibilities  

  • Lead the production and execution of large-scale, complex, ticketed events including the Annual Art Fair and Laumeier After Dark.
  • Lead the production and execution of smaller scale public events including the Holiday Pop-Up shops.
  • Oversee the private event rental program for weddings, corporate events, and more.
  • Lead event-related work flows between all departments to   ensure coordination and timely execution of departmental   tasks.
  • Collaborate and maintain a good working relationship with our operating partner, St. Louis County Parks & Recreation, to ensure Laumeier’s events meet all St. Louis County Parks & Recreation requirements.
  • This role serves as the organizational leader responsible for aligning internal departments around a shared event vision, ensuring every event reflects Laumeier’s mission, brand, visitor experience, and revenue objectives.
  • Champion an exceptional visitor experience by ensuring every event is mission-driven, welcoming, accessible, and memorable for guests, sponsors, artists, vendors, and volunteers.
  • Manage departmental budgets, including working with leadership to create the budgets and track them.
  • Establishment of goals for revenue, attendance, and guest experience for each event as well as post event evaluation.
  • Manage relationships with vendors, such as equipment providers, caterers, in-kind donors and other partners for all Laumeier events.
  • Collaborate with the marketing department on event-related marketing and communication plans.
  • Provide support for Laumeier’s internal events as required, including exhibition openings, donor cultivation, and membership events.
  • Oversee on-site staff and volunteers during events.
  • Represent Laumeier throughout the St. Louis community by cultivating strategic partnerships with artists, businesses, sponsors, civic organizations, and community leaders to expand the Park’s visibility and impact.
  • Work closely with the Development department in identifying, soliciting and stewarding Event sponsors and promotional vendors.
  • Initiate future-focused work. This includes the responsibility to develop and implement a long-term event strategy that aligns with Laumeier’s mission, expands audience engagement, strengthens community partnerships, and increases both earned and contributed revenue.
  • Perform other related duties as required and additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications + Skills

The ideal candidate is well versed and experienced in the production of complex events of varying sizes and the management of the teams and resources to execute them. Must be passionate about providing exceptional experiences and be sensitive to the needs of the organization and its many stakeholders. Candidate will have a deep appreciation for and understanding of visitor experience, hospitality, customer service and marketing and be comfortable interacting with a wide variety of people, including the public, vendors, artists, and volunteers. The successful candidate must be a collaborative colleague who can inspire team participation and work well in a closely knit environment.

Education + Experience

  • Proven track record of successful event production
  • Experience with producing events for large public audiences is essential
  • Experience in a nonprofit organization, preferably one with an arts and culture-related mission, is preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is preferred

Additional Requirements and Physical Demands

  • Ability to pass a background check, including a check for criminal records
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends and extended shifts (10+ hours) as needed
  • Ability to work outdoors year-round
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 40 lbs.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and reach for long periods of time

Compensation

$75,000-$80,000

Benefits package is competitive and includes 100% employer-paid health, dental, vision, life and short-term disability, starting on the first day of employment. Health care plan coverage is also available to spouses, domestic partners and dependents, with the employee being responsible for premiums. A generous amount of PTO is granted and grows with the length of employment.

No relocation assistance is available.

Office Culture

Laumeier is a small organization, with modestly sized departments and team members all work closely together. Hybrid work environment with a mix of in-office and remote work, with in-person presence required for events and key meetings.
