Saint Louis Zoo

Responsibilities:

  • Working closely with the development staff and senior leadership this person will be responsible for managing a portfolio of major gift prospects and securing gifts of $10,000+.
  • This fundraising professional will assist in developing and executing short and long-term strategies to secure major gifts for the Zoo’s funding priorities.
  • This position requires a minimum of 150 visits (tours or meetings) with constituents, with the purpose of advancing relationships and soliciting major gifts.
  • Manage a portfolio of individual donors (approximately 200) for solicitation of annual and major gifts of $10,000 and above for operations, capital, programs, and endowment and planned gifts, plus acquiring and stewarding members of the Marlin Perkins Society at $1,000 or more.
  • Set goals for major gifts and regularly report on progress to goal.
  • Monitor all prospect contacts to ensure positive and purposeful prospect and donor relations.
  • Undertake letter and proposal writing as necessary.
  • The position is responsible for advancing donor relationships through integrated “moves” management.
  • Plan and implement programs and practices which cultivate, solicit, and steward prospective and existing donors.
  • Assist in the management of the prospect tracking function of Raiser’s Edge.
  • Annually host approximately 60 prospect and donor tours (a few occur on weekends) and 75 meetings, both at the Zoo and away from the Zoo.
  • Annually attend approximately 12 Zoo-sponsored evening events.
  • Prepare call reports following visits and other contacts with donors including monthly activity and progress reports.
  • Participate in regular department and donor meetings and events.
  • Assist with Board and Committee meetings as needed.
  • Work collaboratively with and in support of volunteers, other development and Zoo staff to cultivate and solicit donors for institutional priorities.
  • Join and attend professional groups and educational sessions as needed; keep abreast of current trends in philanthropy.
  • All other duties deemed necessary as requested by the Director of Development.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required with a minimum of five years’ experience in development/institutional advancement and major gifts.
  • Demonstrated experience in securing major and planned gifts and a strong knowledge of philanthropy.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Raiser’s Edge preferred.
  • Possess initiative, mature judgment, exceptional organizational abilities, effective written and verbal communications skills and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to think creatively and develop innovative solutions is essential.
  • The successful candidate must be able to work collaboratively with the Zoo’s Development Department staff and executive officers, plus demonstrate the ability to interact with donors, team members and other Zoo staff to create strong relationships and foster them toward philanthropic giving to the Zoo.
  • CFRE certificate desired, but not required.
