earthday365 (formerly St. Louis Earth Day) is currently seeking a seasoned environmental professional to lead the organization. This person will have the opportunity to shape the environmental landscape in St. Louis and beyond through our programs and outreach. The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing the organization’s strategic planning, operations, and programs. Other key duties include fundraising, marketing, and community outreach. This position will report directly to the Board of Directors.

Responsibilities:

1) Operations: Implements the organization’s mission by planning and overseeing its programs and operations.

• Accountable for all of the organization’s operations, including programs, marketing and communications, government relations, general administration, volunteer and vendor management, and regulatory compliance.

• Relies primarily on staff to execute the organization’s work by empowering and delegating to staff.

• Maintains an adept staff, including hiring, firing, and retention.

• Coaches staff to excel and guides the staff’s professional development.

• Facilitates a positive, trusting, and productive work environment.

• Develops and implements earthday365’s policies and procedures.

• Continuously seeks to improve the organization, staff, and self through openness to new ideas.

2) Financial Performance and Viability: Develops and allocates resources to ensure earthday365’s financial ability to execute its mission.

• The Executive Director is the primary resource to develop revenue, including earning sponsorships, writing grants, and seeking other sources of revenue.

• Responsible for the fiscal integrity of earthday365.  Develops and presents an annual budget to the Board of Directors, to set financial priorities and promote resource stewardship.  Works with the accountant to develop monthly financial statements to keep the board informed of the organization’s financial standing.

• Manages earthday365’s staff and programs within the approved budget.  Plans the organization’s finances to maintain a positive financial standing.

3) Organization Mission, Vision and Strategy: Works with board, staff, and community stakeholders to ensure that earthday365’s mission is developed and fulfilled through the organization’s programs, events, and community outreach.

• Ensures that the strategic plan supports the organization’s overall health and mission at the nexus of social and environmental justice.  Works with staff and Board of Directors to evaluate and revise the strategic plan.

• Enhances earthday365’s image as the organization’s primary public face to the organization’s constituents, the media, and the general public. Works closely and visibly with other professional, civic, and private organizations and individuals.  Establishes and maintains strategic relationships.

4) Board Governance: Works closely with the Board of Directors to align on, govern, and promote the organization’s mission, decision making, development efforts, and standing in the community.

• Communicates effectively with the Board by providing timely and accurate information necessary for the Board to make informed, timely, and strategic decisions. Seeks their involvement in policy decisions, fundraising and to increase the overall visibility of the organization.

• Works closely with Board members to lead Board and committee meetings.

• Responds to the duties and requests made by the Board of Directors at large and its committees.

Preferred professional qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in applicable field required. Master’s degree in nonprofit administration, sustainability or related field is a benefit.

• Three or more years in senior nonprofit management and development.

• Strong passion for the environment and social justice.  Sincere desire to contribute to a more sustainable future with the ability to operate at a high-level, self-directed, detail-oriented and reliable manner.

• Visionary strategic thinking and planning. Ability to envision and convey the organization’s future to the staff, board, volunteers, vendors, donors, and the greater community through multiple media.

• Demonstrated ability to oversee, collaborate, and delegate duties to staff in a positive, professional, and team-oriented manner.  Excellent conflict management skills.

• Excellent donor relations skills and understanding of the funding community including direct funders, influential organizations, partners, volunteers, and private individuals. Previous success in establishing relationships with and securing funds from such parties.

• Strong written and oral communication skills. Comfortable engaging with the public and adept at open dialogue and resolving conflict.

• Experience working with multiple parties such as a Board of Directors, vendors, and volunteers.

• Solid organizational abilities, including planning, project management, and delegation.

• Strong financial management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision making, and reporting.

• Experience working with nonprofit software, including Salsa (or similar CRM), Microsoft Office, Google Docs, and social media platforms.

• Successful experience in event planning.

• Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends during the festival and other events.

Benefits and Compensation

• Budgeted salary $50,000.  Target future compensation $60,000-$65,000 based on performance.
