Parents as Teachers National Center (PATNC) is an international, nonprofit organization that promotes optimal early development, learning and health of young children by supporting and engaging their parents and caregivers. We advance the delivery of high quality services for families through a comprehensive system of supports and innovative solutions.

Our internationally recognized network uses an evidence-based model to deliver parent education primarily through personal visits and group meetings. We equip parents with knowledge and resources to prepare their children, from prenatal through kindergarten, for a stronger start in life and greater success in school. Parents as Teachers programs operate in various settings, including schools, hospitals, faith-based organizations and housing communities.

About This Position

The National Director of Equity serves as the primary subject matter expert and architect for Parents as Teachers National Center’s diversity and cross-cultural relations plans and programs that has an international impression. This position has a broad reach with building up an organizational culture surrounding diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) efforts and aims to foster diversity across — and beyond — the organization, from staff, to vendors and suppliers, to the community organizations they partner with and support, to the PATNC Board of Directors.

A successful candidate should have a global understanding of collaboration to thread DEIA efforts throughout the Parents as Teachers network to positively impact the organization’s footprint and impact on Black, Brown and Native American families and in diverse communities. The candidate will have strong organizational skills and project management experience to successfully navigate and manage a fast-pace work environment, as well as a solid understanding of learning systems to help build programs and materials. The candidate should be able to hit the ground running with a self-starter attitude utilizing a deliverable-based approach to drill into current practices and existing programs to suggest and implement programs and solutions to management to inform research-based results.

Essential Functions

  • Strategy & Collaboration: Builds upon existing diversity efforts and designs and implements new, actionable and measurable initiatives that generate meaningful change and impact, guiding efforts that align with the organizational value of diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility (DEIA). Researches, develops, recommends, and executes creative strategies to foster the organization’s diversity goals. Works with leadership, the DEIA Council and the Board of Directors to guide embracement of diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility as fundamental values – leading efforts to ensure these values are reflected in the operations and activities of Parents as Teachers. Has overall responsibility for diversity and cross-cultural efforts, collaborating with leadership, the DEIA Council and the broader network on initiatives and programs. Provides guidance and senior leadership support to the DEIA Council’s efforts to ensure continuity and sustainable impact across networks and stakeholders. Develops coaching strategies and facilitates dialogues that address specific concerns, issues, and supports needed to encourage resolution of conflicts/disputes relating to diversity and/or cross-cultural initiatives and activities. Engages with Human Resources staff to support DEIA-related staff developmental efforts and organizational goals alignment. Collaborates specifically with fund and grants development to provide supplemental information for grant applications and opportunities that pertain to DEIA efforts and related program metrics for reporting.
  • Mission & Reach: Serves as the DEIA lens, along with the DEIA Council, for PATNC-related materials, resources, and trainings pending from PATNC. Informs the development and the design of, and engages in, platform training and direct development of online training programs on both diversity and cross-cultural awareness internally and externally for PATNC employees and its field. Collaborates with senior and departmental leadership to synthesize information from the field, experts, and training evaluations to inform the training, curriculum and implementation support materials (i.e. field feedback and conference data). Serves as an additional lens for ADA (Americans with Disability Act of 1990; accessibility) and review and cultural editor of published PATNC resources and training content and design. Informs the development of resources and content for PATNC-associated organizations; and helps identify practices that will lead to the successful recruitment and retention of diverse candidates and staff, as well as families.
  • Data Management: Maintains metrics and prepares periodic reports for senior management for evaluating/measuring diversity and cross-cultural resource initiatives. Directs the development of survey instruments to measure satisfaction with these initiatives. Creates instruments linking diversity and cross-cultural awareness to the organization’s performance management processes and business plan. Guides the collection and analysis of statistical data to evaluate the company’s population and impacts in accordance with the organizational DEIA values. Remains abreast of new learning/research related to best practices related to DEIA.

Supervisory Responsibility: No

Supervision Required: Work is often established by the incumbent and procedures are prioritized by individual in order to accomplish complex goals and tasks. There is relatively little routine work and decision-making is required.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree is required.
  • Master’s degree is preferred.

Experience:

  • At least five years of progressive experience in developing and implementing organizational diversity and cross-cultural effective transformational strategies in organizations with broad network reach and diverse constituencies.
  • Experience in planning professional development and project management.
  • Previous nonprofit experience preferred.
  • Experience in deliverable-driven capacity preferred.

Knowledge:

  • Bilingual preferred.
  • Thorough understanding of diversity principles, practices, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of current research and practices in cultural diversity and accessibility.

Skills:

  • Passion for diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility, as well as Parents as Teachers’ mission.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have: proficiency of computers and typing, input and access data management systems, and ability to operate within Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and Office 365.
  • Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze and interpret business periodicals, professional journals, and technical procedures and government regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals. Adept at facilitating difficult discussions, managing change, creating and strengthening partnerships, and aligning an array of efforts across a large, complex organization and its network reach. Excellent verbal and written communication skills including proven dispute resolution skills and social media savvy. Strong presentation skills for a variety of audiences both in collaborative or individual settings.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as fractions percentages, ratios and proportions in practical solutions.

Reasoning Ability:

  • Ability to develop and implement proactive initiatives (including training, tools, and other solutions), asses their impact, and adjust as necessary.
  • Ability to function independently where appropriate but to recognize when issues escalate and need to be referred to other resources.
  • Ability to assess a situation and determine the best course of action (independent judgment).
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, and establish facts and draw valid conclusions.

Physical Demands: Moderate – walking/standing for long periods.

Travel Demands: Moderate Travel Requirements; less than 50% of the time.
