Position Title:  Member Marketing and Communications Manager

About AAO:

The AAO is a professional association of educationally qualified orthodontic specialists dedicated to ethically advancing the art and science of orthodontics, improving the public’s health by promoting quality orthodontic care and supporting the practice of orthodontics. The AAO is comprised of nearly 19,000 members in the United States, Canada, and abroad. The specialty of orthodontics is the oldest and largest dental specialty recognized by the American Dental Association.

Position Summary:

The Member Marketing and Communications Manager is responsible for building the AAO brand industry-wide and supporting critical AAO initiatives. This role leads marketing strategies to acquire, engage, and retain AAO members and to drive awareness and usage of programs.

Plus, manages media relations by crafting press releases, developing story pitches, and building relationships with journalists and influencers. It also supports senior leadership with speechwriting and crisis communications.

Essential Functions:

Enhance AAO member marketing communications, leveraging data-driven insights to optimize outreach, engagement, and program adoption.
·       Lead the strategic direction for member communications, including major events (Annual Session, Winter Conference, etc.) and programs using a variety of channels, including eBulletins, SMS, and recruitment campaigns

·       Collaborate with AAO departments to ensure the member website remains a relevant, high-value resource for members.

·       Oversee the development of a comprehensive member growth and engagement strategy in collaboration with the Membership team, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.

·       Serve as a key strategic advisor to key Council and Committees like the Member Marketing Subcommittee, Council on Government Advocacy (COGA), and AAO Professional Advocacy Conference Board, aligning marketing efforts with advocacy and membership goals

·       Provide leadership and mentorship to a Marketing Coordinator, fostering a high-performing and results-driven team.

·       Develop consumer and industry public/media relations strategies and story outreach using PR and marketing platforms, traditional media, and partnership opportunities. Coordinate requests with external media, journalists, or online outlets to educate the public and amplify the AAO’s reach outside of existing marketing channels.

·       Write press releases, fact sheets, speeches for key stakeholders, and talking points supporting internal (member) and external (consumer) programs.

Education/Experience:

·       Bachelor’s degree with an emphasis in journalism, public relations, marketing or communications required

·       5 to 7 years of experience in managing external communications, publications, or public relations

·       Significant media relations experience in key message development; creation of media kits/press rooms; spokesperson preparation; fulfilling media requests for expert spokespeople preferred.

·       Experience with marketing platforms such as Campaign Monitor and WordPress

·       Demonstrated experience achieving business goals by developing and optimizing marketing campaign to achieve business goals

·       Strong interpersonal, customer service, and project management skills required.

·       Ability to facilitate and manage multiple projects with varying deadlines

Skills and Abilities:

·       Superb writing skills (samples required)

·       Top-notch project management skills and the ability to manage many different projects at once, from assignment to delivery, with meticulous attention to detail when writing, editing, and producing content

·       Extremely comfortable conversing with both traditional media and digital, experience leading crisis communication sensitive messaging

·       Advanced skills in PR tools such as Cision PR Newswire or similar

·       Proficient knowledge using marketing tools like Generative AI platforms, Canva, CMS platforms, and Microsoft Office products

·       Excellent collaboration and peer-to-peer leadership skills

·       Experience with marketing platforms such as Campaign Monitor and WordPress

·       Advanced skills in driving, analyzing, and optimizing recruitment/retention campaigns, including A/B testing messaging and creative.

·       Strong interpersonal, customer service, and project management skills required.

·       Ability to facilitate and manage multiple projects with varying deadlines

·       Strong eye for engaging in on-brand visual presentation

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

Sedentary inside office work with no exposure to weather conditions. Requires the ability to lift, pack and unpack boxes of office supplies and to stand for long periods or longer days than usual. Occasional travel is required, approximately three trips annually of 3-8 days’ duration. Due to volunteer members’ schedules as practicing orthodontists, occasional weekend/weeknight meetings are required.
