The Rome Group:

Success Stories

Every organization — even those that are doing great work in the community every day — can be even better. Our job is to help develop a plan, strategies and disciplines to sustain that success for the long-term.

Developing a sustainable business model in a competitive landscape

Word of Life Lutheran School / Business Planning

As the last Lutheran school in South St. Louis City, Word of Life Lutheran School (WOL) had experienced declining enrollment for several years. Between competition from charter schools and leadership transitions at the school, WOL was losing students and money, but the need for quality, affordable education was still great. The students who were enrolling increasingly needed scholarships and financial aid to afford the tuition to attend.

Assessing operations during organizational growth

Today and Tomorrow Educational Foundation / Organizational Assessments

Launched in the early 1990’s, TTEF provides scholarships for low- and moderate-income families that want to send their children to faith-based and/or private schools. The organization had experienced growth over a period of several years, and its leaders wanted to ensure that it continued to operate efficiently and maximize additional opportunities for growth through this transition.

Enhancing development efforts for long term city beautification

Tower Grove Park / Interim Fund Development

The Rome Group has worked with Tower Grove Park in a number of ways over the years, including providing interim fund development during staff transitions.

Helping a key development director reach her campaign goal

Special Olympics of Missouri / Development Coaching

For 40 years, Special Olympics Missouri has been spreading the message that people with intellectual disabilities can – and will – succeed when given the chance. With more than 15,000 athletes and 995 coaches training and competing all over the state, Special Olympics Missouri saw an opportunity to unify training for all their efforts under one roof and launched a campaign to build a centralized training facility.

Leading organizational leaders to fundraising success

St. Louis Public Schools Foundation / Development Coaching

Leaders often look to coaches to help them discover answers to “how to” and “what next” questions. When St. Louis Public Schools Foundation hired a new President, she came to The Rome Group to assist her through fundraising coaching. Her goal was to ensure that she was using the most effective strategies to secure major gifts and to raise more funds for their strategic priorities: early childhood education, college and career readiness, school leaders, and health and wellness.

Developing a new organization structure to meet the needs of new leadership

Queen of Peace Center / Leadership Development & Coaching

When Queen of Peace Center’s (QOPC) new Executive Director came on board after the founding director retired, she wanted to make a number of changes to help realize her vision and support women with addiction and their families who needed their services. She started with the organizational structure – as the agency grew over the years, the decentralized structure had become cumbersome and inefficient.

Preventing fundraising down-time during leadership transition

PROMO / Interim Fund Development

After having worked with PROMO on the development of an ambitious strategic plan the organization underwent significant change, including a merger and expansion. Finding itself with no staff to lead its development efforts, PROMO – Missouri’s statewide organization advocating for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender equality – approached our team again to provide interim fund development support as it searched for a new department leader.

Gaining community input to develop a successful program

Partners for Progress Community Health Initiative / Market Analysis

When the Health Committee of Partners for Progress of Greater St. Charles (PfP) asked our team to determine the feasibility of establishing a transformative community-wide health initiative in St. Charles County, the group wanted input from the community about the best way to move forward.

Turning successful student achievements into funding for new school facility

Logos School / Capital Campaign Planning & Implementation

Looking to secure their future and support current faculty and programs, Logos engaged our team to help them to conduct a $5 million capital campaign. Turning Struggles into Strengths, The Campaign for Logos School, would enable the school to further its mission of providing strong academics and innovative therapy to youth at increased risk for dropping out, suicide, or incarceration.

Uncovering fundraising potential to successfully push towards a goal

Kingdom House / Campaign Feasibility & Planning Studies

Kingdom House needed to significantly increase its fundraising to continue to expand and enhance services, and to capitalize on time-sensitive opportunities to increase their reach – the organization was offering a full range of social services to families and people of all ages in and near the South City area and wanted to increase its footprint in the city.

Strengthening organizational oversight for board and staff

Fathers’ Support Center / Leadership Development

Fathers’ Support Center was founded in 1997 to give men the skills to financially and emotionally support their children. With its founder still at the helm, Fathers’ Support Center’s leadership recognized the importance of building a strong Board as the organization plans for an eventual leadership transition.

Using research to strengthen organizational business operations

Jewish Family and Children’s Service / Business Planning

Jewish Family and Children’s Service (JF&CS) wanted to assess its operations, consider the external landscape, and develop a plan that would position the organization for growth of its work providing social services to the Jewish and general communities in St. Louis. Because of our team’s understanding of both nonprofit organizations and the St. Louis environment, JF&CS chose us to facilitate its business planning process.

Evaluating potential fundraising avenues for thriving organization

Epworth Children and Family Services / Audits and Plans

With its track record of service in the community helping children, youth and families, Epworth wanted to ensure it was not missing any opportunities to raise funds for its important work.

Using data to find a new home for the Downtown Y

Downtown Y / Market Analysis

Realizing that the building was too big for its membership of 1,300, and in need of significant investment, the Board and staff of the Downtown Y wanted to explore various options for a new location.

Guiding strategic decisions to improve organizational mission and programs

Diversity Awareness Partnership / Strategic Planning

Best known for its signature training programs on diversity, equity, and inclusion, the Diversity Awareness Partnership (DAP) needed to remain nimble enough to respond quickly to community events.

Assessing the possibility of a $500 million renovation for St. Louis’ most treasured monument

CityArchRiver 2015 / Campaign Feasibility & Planning Studies

With the 50th anniversary of St. Louis’ iconic Gateway Arch fast approaching, city leaders recognized that the Arch grounds would need a major renovation to make it easier for St. Louisans and visitors to access and enjoy this most treasured monument. But at an estimated price tag of $500 million, was such a renovation even possible?

Successfully facilitating an organizational merger

Center for Survivors of Torture and War Trauma and Bilingual International Assistant Services / Mergers & Collaborations

Finding itself at a crossroads in a changing funding landscape, in 2015 The Center for Survivors of Torture and War Trauma engaged our team to help find a partner to strengthen their infrastructure and broaden their reach.

Making exceptional education attainable for students seeking bright futures

Cardinal Ritter College Preparatory High School / Major Gifts

Since 1979, Cardinal Ritter College Prep High School (CRCP) has been providing an exceptional Catholic education to a predominantly African-American student population. Many of its students come from low- to middle-income families, so the school relies heavily on contributions to keep tuition affordable to anyone who wants a CRCP education.

Developing a new grant program to meet organizational needs

Youthbridge Community Foundation / Program Learning and Performance Management

Today, we know YouthBridge as a community foundation that advises donors on what nonprofits to support, administers charitable funds, and provides support to nonprofit organizations on sustainability. But this organization is no stranger to change – it began as the German General Protestant Orphan’s Home dating back to 1877 and has since evolved to meet the community’s changing needs.
