Job Title: Director of Missions
Position Type: Full-Time
Reports To: Executive Pastor
Overview: The Director of Missions leads and shapes The Gathering’s local and global mission strategy, providing strategic leadership for mission initiatives, partnerships, and congregational engagement across multiple sites. Grounded in an intentional commitment to dignity, local leadership, and shared agency, this role prioritizes partnership and mutuality over doing for or directing others.
The ideal candidate is a strategic, culturally competent, and relational leader who can imagine what’s next and lead with clarity and consistency.
Key Responsibilities
Local Missions
● Provide vision, direction, and leadership for The Gathering’s overall local mission strategy, ensuring alignment with the church’s values and vision.
● Lead the continued development, growth, and execution of The Gathering’s primary local mission initiatives, coordinating logistics, partnerships, and volunteer engagement.
● Provide strategic leadership and supervision for The Literacy Partnership, supporting its leadership and honoring its distinct role and contribution within the community, while ensuring alignment with The Gathering’s broader mission strategy.
● Build and maintain strong, reciprocal relationships with schools, nonprofits, and community partners.
● Lead and oversee key church-wide service initiatives, including ServeSTL Sundays, The Gathering’s participation in local Pride festivals and LGBTQ+ community events, and internal service projects.
● Collaborate with staff to promote service opportunities and share stories of impact.
Global Missions
● Direct The Gathering’s global mission partnerships, with a focus on our long-standing work in Mozambique.
● Maintain relationships, communication, and accountability with international partners, ensuring shared expectations and mutual responsibility.
● Plan and lead overseas mission trips, primarily to Mozambique, in close partnership with local leadership and communities.
● Explore new global partnerships that are community-led, sustainable, and aligned with The Gathering’s mission values, as capacity and vision allow.
Leadership & Integration
● Align all mission efforts with The Gathering’s overall vision and ministry strategy.
● Manage the missions budget.
● Recruit, equip, and support volunteers and lay leaders across sites.
● Serve as a leading voice for the Christmas Eve and Easter generosity campaigns.
● Track and share mission outcomes through metrics, stories, and reporting.
Qualifications
● Strong leadership and project management skills.
● Deep passion for justice, compassion, and community transformation.
● Proven experience in mission, nonprofit, or church-based service leadership.
● Excellent communication and relationship-building abilities.
● Comfortable managing volunteers, events, and logistics across multiple sites.
● Ability to work collaboratively with staff, congregants, and external partners.
● Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
● Familiarity with Google Workspace and digital communication tools.
● Experience navigating cross-cultural relationships with humility and cultural awareness.
● Cross-cultural experience or international missions background preferred.
Schedule & Compensation
● Full-time, salaried position (40 hours/week)
● Occasional evening or weekend responsibilities required for events and travel
