ABOUT THE POSITION

The Tax/Technical Director ensures all hardware and software needs of the TAP enterprise are met.  The Tax/Technical Director also stays current with tax law changes as they relate to the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program and is a primary resource for site management on tax-related topics. In conjunction with TAP site management and with host site technology management, the Tax/Technical Director ensures technology is operational and meets or exceeds all data security requirements.  As a part of this expectation, the Tax/Technical Director interacts regularly with a variety of TAP partners and provides support to the Executive Director, the Operations Manager, and a large group of volunteers. Reports to the Executive Director.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Under the leadership of the Executive Director, implements the plan to accomplish the mission in accordance with the policies and priorities set by the Board
  • Interfaces with and builds strong relationships with vendors, TAP host sites, volunteers, and the IRS in support of tax preparation efforts
  • Fosters a positive, responsive, collaborative, and ethical culture among volunteers and partnering organizations which align with TAP’s mission. This includes meeting the VITA standards for training, quality control, and data security
  • Remains current with tax law changes relevant to VITA and assists the Executive Director with volunteer training and ongoing client support
  • Ensures that tax software and other applications used are configured such that current IRS rules, tax law, and VITA requirements are met
  • Along with the Executive Director and the Operations Director, manages an annual budget and technology plan as approved by the Board
  • Works with TAP site management and host site management as necessary to ensure TAP hardware and IRS tax software (currently TaxSlayer) are accessible in compliance with IRS standards, including proper volunteer credentialing and data security requirements
  • Ensures volunteer management software and client appointment software are installed, up to date, properly configured, and operational to meet the needs of the TAP organization. This responsibility will be extended to any future software that may be added to the TAP portfolio
  • Oversees TAP’s website and access to related applications
  • Manages TAP’s technology inventory
  • Supports TAP’s Operations Manager in facilitating mailings to clients and volunteers
  • Provides requested reports to the Executive Director and Board; may attend scheduled Board meetings as determined by the Board

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Understanding of TAP’s mission and the ability to effectively promote it, both within the organization, with current and prospective business partners, and with the community at large
  • Strong technology background
  • Proven ability to effectively perform multiple concurrent tasks
  • Commitment to obtain VITA tax preparer certification each tax season and remain current on updates to federal and state tax laws as they relate to TAP clients
  • Ability to communicate effectively with TAP business partners, TAP site managers, and volunteers in general
  • Ability to identify and implement steps to improve operational efficiencies of tax preparation efforts through use of technology

SALARY AND OTHER INFORMATION

  • Non-benefit, part-time position (estimated to be approximately 500 hours annually) with compensation commensurate with experience
  • Some night and weekend work. Longer hours from October through April, with a lesser time commitment during the remaining months
  • Most work can be done remotely, but face-to-face interaction and some site visits may be necessary
