Senior Chess Club Associate

Summary

The Saint Louis Chess Club (STLCC) is an educational non-profit seeking
individuals for the Senior Chess Club Associate position. This position entails
helping to orchestrate and supervise front desk communications and day-to-day
business operations and ensuring the satisfactory experience for members and
visitors in a mission-driven environment.
It is the mission of the Chess Club, to maintain a formal program of instruction to
teach the game of chess and to promote and support its educational program
through community outreach and local and national partnerships, increasing the
awareness of the educational value of chess. On the Chess Campus located in the
Central West End and in hundreds of St. Louis classrooms each week, Chess Club
programming provides members and guests with a multitude of opportunities to
enjoy the game of chess.

The Club’s internal programming includes the hosting of major national and
international chess tournaments, weekly classes and club-level USCF-rated
tournaments, a private lessons service, a library, as well as a casual play area.

Key Responsibilities:

● Lead and oversee the daily workflow of the Chess Club department by
supervising the on-shift staff.
● Provide excellent customer service to members and guests via telephone,
email, or in person.
● Serve as an escalation point for customer questions, complaints, and
suggestions according to Chess Club procedures.
● Coordinate and maintain a clean and orderly space.
● Supervise and monitor the Chess Club space to ensure members and guests
adhere to policies.
● Promote the Chess Club’s mission, programming, and upcoming events.
● Represent the Club professionally when interacting with the members and
guests.
● Provide tours to members and guests and work to enhance the tour
experience.
● Monitor calendars and schedule appointments.
● Perform light clerical duties, including typing, filing, and completing simple
forms.
● Operate office machines, including copiers, scanners, phones, Point of Sale,
computers, TVs, and other standard office equipment.
● Update members, contact details, and additional records in membership
software.
● Utilize registration software for tournaments and events.
● Support Tournament and Event operations.
● Oversee and assist with the opening and closing of the Club’s facility.
● Cash drawer reconciliation.
● Assist with special events and perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
● Supervisory experience
● Experience with Google Suite and standard workplace technology
● Strong Customer service skills. Retail or hospitality experience is a plus
● Strong communication skills
● Organization skills and attention to detail
● No chess experience necessary

Work Environment

The Chess Club is primarily an indoor facility spread across three floors, each with
a distinct purpose: a quiet tournament hall, a casual playing area, and staff-only
spaces for offices and storage. All floors experience heavy foot traffic, creating a
dynamic and engaging atmosphere. While most activities occur on-site, occasional
off-site outdoor events are part of the role. This position involves frequent
standing, light lifting, and regular interaction with guests, members, and fellow
staff, fostering a collaborative and energetic work environment.

Compensation and Benefits
This position is an hourly non-exempt role with a minimum of 30 hours a week,
mainly weekends and nights.
Hourly Rate: $20.00
Employer paid Health, Dental, and Vision benefits.
Eligibility for participation in the 401k is determined at the beginning of each year
based on meeting the plan’s requirements.
