Job Title: Assistant Director of Advocacy

Position Type:  Part-Time (20 hours a week), with flexibility to attend weekend and evening meetings as needed. This in-person position is based in St Louis, MO with some flexibility for hybrid work.

Compensation: $25 per hour with generous PTO policy and paid holidays.

Position Summary: The Assistant Director of Advocacy assists the Director of Advocacy in leading the organization’s efforts to advance consumer protection policy at the local, state and federal levels. This role involves strategy development, coalition-building, managing advocacy campaigns, and representing the organization in public forums and legislative settings. The Assistant Director works closely with the Director of Advocacy, internal teams, community advisory groups, stakeholders, and policymakers to ensure the protection and advancement of consumer rights.

Primary Responsibilities:

·       Strategic Leadership: Assist in the development and implementation of the organization’s advocacy strategy, particularly in the areas of utilities and banking. Monitor legislative and regulatory developments and respond effectively to proposed policies.

·       Policy Advocacy & Representation: Advocate for consumer rights through public testimony, media engagement, policy proposals, and legislative hearings. Represent the organization in meetings with lawmakers, regulatory agencies, and other advocacy groups.

·       Coalition Building & Stakeholder Engagement: Assist in the Cultivation and sustainment of relationships with other advocacy organizations, stakeholders, and community leaders.

·       Public Engagement: Design, launch, and manage public campaigns to raise awareness around key consumer issues, driving meaningful action and engagement from the community.

·       Monitoring & Reporting: Assist in the tracking and assessment of the outcomes of advocacy campaigns, policy advancements, and regulatory changes. Regularly update the Director of Advocacy on progress and impact.

·       Grant Writing & Communications: Collaborate with the Executive Director and Director of Advocacy on grant writing efforts, social media campaigns, and other organizational communications.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities

·    In-depth understanding of policy advocacy, legislative processes, and regulatory frameworks.

·    Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including proficiency in public speaking and media relations.

·    Proven track record in coalition-building, stakeholder engagement, and grassroots mobilization.

·     Strong organizational, project management, and strategic planning abilities.

·     Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and inspire teams while fostering a collaborative work environment.

Desired Experience and Education:

Experience: 3-5 years in advocacy, public policy, or a related field. Experience in nonprofit advocacy is strongly preferred.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in social work, political science, public policy, legal studies, or a related field. Advanced degrees or certifications are a plus.
