POSITION TITLE: Director of Development                    DEPARTMENT:  Administration
REPORTS TO: Chief Executive Officer

POSITION SUMMARY: Confluence Academies is seeking a dynamic, results-oriented individual to establish and lead a comprehensive development program that will build a community of donors and friends, and secure vital resources to support students and teachers. The Director of Development will be a seasoned professional who is self-motivated and goal-oriented, and is passionate about education equity. The Director of Development will be responsible for implementing a robust development program that includes annual giving, major gifts, grant management and planned giving activities. This individual will also be responsible for identifying and cultivating current and new donors and leaders, building relationships with corporate and foundation partners, and executing engagement programs and appropriate outreach and fundraising events.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS include the following. Other duties may be assigned:

• Create a robust development plan that includes strategic initiatives for annual giving efforts, grants, major gifts and planned gifts to meet established goals. Ensure the plan includes detailed tactics, timelines and critical partnerships where appropriate
• Work collaboratively and creatively with teachers and staff to appropriately position development opportunities and integrate development messages into publications, reports and collateral materials to support the cultivation and stewardship of donors
• Research, select and implement a donor management database that is appropriate in size and function for a growing development operation
• Establish a system for gift processing and implement best practices for acknowledging and recognizing donors and leadership
• Work closely with the CEO to develop, implement and monitor a comprehensive multi-year fundraising and development plan for Confluence Academies that includes individual giving, major gifts, annual appeals, and grants
• Work with the CEO to identify Confluence Academies’ funding priorities and opportunities and utilize a Case for Funding that is reviewed and revised annually
• Build and manage a major gifts program including individual givers, foundations, corporate and community partners
• Identify, cultivate, solicit and steward current and prospective donors and increase donor retention
• Create and manage an Annual Giving Program including annual appeals and special events
• Provide strategic and creative direction to elevate and increase the annual giving program through print, digital and social media
• Prioritize staying informed about potential grant programs, funders and grant cycles
• Research and apply for grants; create effective cover letters, letters of intent, and proposals that share the mission, programs, goals and stories of Confluence Academies
• Create and maintain a detailed and up-to-date grants calendar to track grants and ensure items are submitted in a timely fashion
• Prepare outcomes reports and grants related materials for funders as requested
• Develop internal reporting systems, keep records of all grants materials, and maintain records of outcomes, deliverables, and associated documentation prepared for funders
• Created and maintain a donor database to track donor and gifts information; responsible for data entry, query, and report production
• Ensure the proper receiving, allocating, recording, and acknowledgement of all gifts
• Coordinate with Marketing to provide statistics, student outcomes, alumnae stories, and other information needed for donor communications, stewardship, social media and the website
• Supervise development staff
• Collaborate with and support the CEO and Friends of Confluence in efforts to engage the Board in fundraising
• Monitor giving trends as they relate to education, charter schools, etc. relevant to Confluence Academies
• Other fundraising duties as assigned by the Chief Executive Officer

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education/Experience: Bachelor’s degree or higher, with five to seven years of development/fundraising experience or appropriate related experience. A proven fundraising success including major gift solicitation, campaign management and community engagement. Success in working directly with major and mid-level giving donors, corporate funders, grant makers, Board members, committees, and volunteers. Proven ability to write for grants and successfully secure funding. Proven ability to direct successful annual fundraising campaigns. Demonstrated track record in building meaningful partnerships with donors and stakeholders. Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills and follow up. Excellent writing skills – able to craft messaging that articulates the need, is persuasive and appeals to multiple audiences. Strong organizational and time management skills. Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word and Excel. Database management. Proficient in utilizing Blackbaud, Raiser’s Edge, CharityEngine and/or other fundraising and donor management software. Proven ability to work collaboratively with others. Ability to supervise others. Understands how to engage social media platforms with fundraising efforts. Familiarity with St. Louis philanthropic networks a plus.

Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
