POSITION SUMMARY

The Manager of Grassroots Organizing implements grassroots organizing programs for Advocates of PPSLRSWMO and PPSLRSWMO in Missouri and Illinois. The Manager helps develop organizing strategy and they supervise a team of regional Organizers to build community power, move policy, and shift elections toward reproductive freedom. This highly collaborative role serves as the department’s expert coach on tools and tactics, partnering with organizing staff to execute strategies that grow the network of advocates taking action with Planned Parenthood. They provide day-to-day staff support and oversight on organizing technology including the Voter Activation Network (VAN).

The ideal candidate is an experienced organizer with a track record of leading advocacy campaigns and building community leadership. They’re a flexible trainer and facilitator who can integrate creative, people-centered organizing with a strong data backbone. Volunteer teams, turnout plans, event agendas, and progress-to-goal tracking are their bread and butter. They have managed others – whether staff or volunteer – and they create a team environment of collaboration and growth. They recognize how systems of oppression create health disparities and they are ready to help cultivate an organizing program for and by the people most impacted by sexual and reproductive health policy.

Work Conditions: Location, Travel, Physical Requirements:  Primarily-remote position with a flexible location in Missouri or southwestern Illinois. Periodic travel required, including overnight, throughout Missouri and southern Illinois, and occasionally nationally. Some evening and weekend hours are required. Required physical activities include work outdoors in all seasons, canvassing, and long periods on the computer and phone.

PRIMARY DUTIES PERFORMED:

Organizing Leadership
●       Work closely with the Director of Policy and Advocacy and the Legislative Director to help set organizing strategy and design campaigns
●       Directly supervise a team of regional Organizers to execute the affiliate’s organizing strategy
○       Power-Building: Build regional leadership teams and grow the base of supporters taking action for reproductive freedom
○       Cross-Movement: Build coalition relationships and solidarity through action
○       Policy: Organize people impacted by policy to participate powerfully in the legislative process
○       Electoral: Move voters to support Advocates’ endorsed candidates and issues
●       Fill in to support on-the-ground organizing when needed

Training and Coaching
●       Lead onboarding for new organizing staff, in partnership with the Dir. of Policy & Advocacy
●       Build staff capacity: identify training gaps and opportunities and build staff skills through group and individual training and coaching
●       Check in regularly with organizing staff

Optimize Organizing Tools
●       Provide day-to-day staff support and quality control for VAN, the SMS platform Hustle, the relational organizing tool Impactive, and other tools/systems
●       Ensure high-quality organizing data in line with best practices and compliance standards
●       Monitor organizing data to track progress, surface needs, and make recommendations

Coalition and Cross-Movement Work
●       Cultivate collaborative relationships with impacted stakeholders, coalition partners, and (potential) allies; seek opportunities to support other groups

Administrative
●       Day-to-day staff management
●       Coordinate team needs like supply orders and travel logistics
●       Report on and help tell the story of the team’s organizing work

QUALIFICATIONS:

●       Passion for political advocacy, sexual and reproductive freedom, and abortion access
●       Experience planning, managing and implementing grassroots organizing programs (i.e. volunteer teams, phone banks, canvasses, legislative advocacy, etc.)
●       Experience training and coaching others to success
●       Ability to quickly pick up new digital tools and train others on them
●       Experience with VAN, Google Drive, and maintaining volunteer data preferred – but we can train a skilled organizer on new tools
●       Strong writer with experience creating effective recruitment materials
●       Resourceful self-starter with a high level of creative initiative
●       Effective relationship-building, conflict resolution, and emotional intelligence
●       Ability to prioritize, multitask, and meet deadlines with a rapidly-evolving workflow
●       Team player skilled at collaborating across teams, departments, and organizations
●       Comfort and efficacy as a trainer and public speaker
●       Commitment to equity, appreciation of diverse groups, and sensitivity to and ability to navigate cultural differences
●       Organizing experience and relationships in Missouri or southern Illinois is a plus

QUALITY ASSURANCE AND RISK MANAGEMENT:

●       Adhere to PPSLRSWMO policies that ensure the provision of the highest quality and most professional services to all PPSLRSWMO clients
●       Ensure compliance with conditions of 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) guidelines for approved activities
●       Protect PPSLRSWMO assets from liability
●       Ensure the physical safety of PPSLRSWMO clients and staff
●       Protect the confidentiality of Missouri Planned Parenthood clients, donors, board, and all areas of operation
