The T
The BRIC Manager
SUMMARY: Reporting to the Executive Director, the Bullet Related Injury Clinic Manager is responsible for overseeing daily operations of the clinic, supervising the BRIC staff and volunteers, and developing new strategies to optimize care in collaboration with referring Emergency Departments and community partners.
BACKGROUND: The T is a community of health working to reduce the impact of trauma in the St. Louis region. The T was founded in St. Louis, Missouri in 2018 as a volunteer organization focusing on disseminating the national “Stop the Bleed” program in response to high rates of shootings. Through the pandemic it transitioned into a holistic clinic, a mobile harm reduction outreach program, and a walk-in center for people who have bullet related injury or are at risk for overdose. The T centers the experience of the Black masculine body as the body which is most vulnerable to the criminalization of trauma. This includes the experiences of people directly impacted by the consequences of bullet injuries and overdoses. In centering the self-directed healing of Black masculine bodies, The T hopes to promote healing and wellness for ALL. The T supports this healing through public health education, community engagement, self-care resources, harm reduction, as well as direct clinical care for acute and chronic trauma. The team at The T includes health professionals, community health workers, advocates, peers, and community members with lived experience in trauma and recovery.
With co-location and an integrated staff, these models of care are approaching the issues of “gun violence” and “drug use” in the context of what they truly are: acute and chronic expressions of trauma. Through a Black led, queer inclusive collaborative approach and utilizing radical generosity, a focus on being trustworthy, low barrier access, and whole person care, The T is bridging the gaps in institutional-based care which are so often re-traumatizing to those experiencing the pain of injury and chronic loss.
The Bullet Related Injury Clinic (BRIC) is a program within The T that focuses on the clinical and self-care needs for patients and their families for bullet related injury. The BRIC focuses on patients who have been recently injured and are discharged from the Emergency Department. Recognizing that the early experiences and needs for pain management, wound care, and trauma recovery are often traumatic, The BRIC seeks to assist patients and families during this difficult time. In addition, The BRIC provides care for to those who are suffering from the impact of a bullet, whether it was a distant injury, a tragedy within the family or community, or a public event such as a school shooting.
