Position Summary:

The Literacy Coach is a new position that provides literacy training and support for counselors at summer camps who participate in Turn the Page STL’s one hour of literacy a day infusion program for campers, kindergarten through fourth grade.  The Literacy Coach will meet with summer camp directors and counselors to build relationships and create literacy resources based on the summer camp’s theme.  Literacy resources may include books, writing materials, literacy games, hands-on activities, field trip information, author events, and more.  The Literacy Coach will assist with pre and post literacy assessment of the campers.  The Literacy Coach will work with the Executive Director to design literacy infusion in after school programs.

This is a full-time, exempt 40 hours per week position, and includes health care and paid time off.

Primary Responsibilities:

Camp Counselor & Site Support

·         Establish and maintain meaningful connections with summer camp directors and counselors in the Turn the Page STL summer literacy infusion program by visiting sites, providing resources, and supporting the literacy work of the camp counselors.

·         Train summer camp counselors in how to infuse an hour of literacy a day.

·         Provide continued literacy support and mentoring for camp counselors throughout the summer.

·         Assist in the pre and post assessment of campers’ literacy skills.

·         Write, implement and analyze a survey given to camp counselors at the end of the year.

·         Based on assessment results, write a report that identifies the successes and suggested changes to improve the program each year.

Literacy Resources & Materials

·         Schedule and deliver books and materials for each camp’s Family Book-A-Palooza event at the beginning of the summer.

·         Create and schedule delivery of summer literacy kits filled with purchased books, writing materials and games specific to each summer camp site.

·         Write and produce a resource book for camp counselors that includes best practices in literacy, plus opportunities for camps to participate in additional community-wide literacy programs.

·         Provide additional literacy resources requested by camps throughout the summer.

·         Design read-at-home incentives and activities to increase the time families read together.

·         Schedule an end-of-summer literacy party for participating camp sites, counselors, campers and families at each camp site.

Support

·         Schedule and lead the Summer Camp Cohort and the Summer Literacy Infusion Work Team.

·         Manage expenses based on the project budget.

·         Work with the Executive Director to identify and request funding for the summer literacy work.

·         Work with area literacy organizations including public libraries, museums/zoo, public television, among others to provide their resources and opportunities to the summer camp programs.

·         Work with summer camps to design and implement a program to infuse literacy in their afterschool programs and sports teams during the school year.

Skills and Qualifications:

·         Bachelor’s degree in teaching and/or education.

·         Experience in teaching children how to read.

·         Strong commitment to the Turn the Page STL mission.

·         Excellent oral and written communication skills needed.

·         Strong interpersonal skills.

·         Must be punctual, dependable, a self-starter, and possess the ability to effectively multi-task and work independently.

·         Exceptional organizational and time management skills.

·         Experience and comfort using Microsoft Office Suite required.

·         Must be able to comfortably lift/carry up to 25 pounds.

·         Use of personal vehicle required to travel to summer camp programs. Mileage will be reimbursed.

·         Can work virtually or at the Turn the Page STL office; however, must work in-person when needed at camp sites.
