Position Summary
The Director of Advancement, Patient and Friends Programs is responsible for raising private philanthropic funding for Washington University School of Medicine. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director will identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major gifts from individual donors, grateful patients/families, and organizations for her/his assigned departments and divisions within Washington University School of Medicine.

The Director will work collaboratively with assigned Department leadership to advance the vision and goals of the department and will serve as the chief fundraising advisor to the Department Chair, Division Chiefs, and key faculty.

Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Identify, cultivate, solicit and secure major gift commitments for assigned departments and divisions primarily from individual donors, grateful patients and their family members, organizations and selected faculty.
  • Work with faculty proactively to identify new prospects, coordinate fundraising strategies, complete prospect qualification and cultivation calls, and communicate with and visit prospects and donors who are capable of making gifts of $100,000 or more.
  • Develop and maintain a portfolio of major gift prospects and donors for assigned departments and divisions.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the research, teaching and patient care components of assigned departments and divisions in order to effectively articulate the case for support for funding priorities.
  • Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of HIPAA.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree.
  • Five years of successful fundraising experience.
  • Major gift fundraising experience in a medical school or health sciences environment.
  • Grateful patient fundraising experience.
  • Experience in higher education.
  • Proven ability to meet fundraising performance benchmarks.
  • Proven ability and willingness to seek guidance and implement new knowledge obtained through proactive mentorship.
  • Ability to meet and exceed fundraising performance benchmarks and goals.
  • Ability to analyze opportunities, develop and execute a strategy to secure private support.
  • Ability to articulate the needs, interests, and accomplishments of the School of Medicine to a wide range of audiences.
  • Ability to make sound judgments in complex situations.
  • Ability to effectively manage ambiguity.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively in a matrixed environment.

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Five years of related experience.

Salary Range
The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one’s qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
