Assisi House

Assisi House’s mission is to house previously unhoused individuals in small, communal settings where each person is treated with dignity and respect. Assisi House is founded on the principle that each individual is of infinite value, and deserves the opportunity to live in a place where they have respite from the devastating effects of being unhoused.

Job Responsibilities

Relationship Building + Resource Connection

  • Provide direct support to, and engage with, all Assisi House residents on a regular basis by making frequent visits to each house and prioritizing time spent with residents.
  • Employ motivational interviewing and personalism when working with residents in order to build relationships and community. Ensure that each resident feels seen, heard, and valued during their time at Assisi House.
  • Accompany residents in identifying their own goals and co-create a plan to reach those goals. Check in with residents who wish to pursue specific goals on a regular basis to determine steps ahead, deal with setbacks, and re-orient goals as needed.
  • Assist residents to identify and access needed resources such as, but not limited to, employment, income/social security benefits, food stamps, healthcare + mental health supports, transportation, etc.
  • Help residents navigate the healthcare system by connecting them to insurance when needed, setting up new patient visits, attending doctors visits with them, and advocating for their needs to medical professionals.
  • Manage confidential files of each resident with up-to-date, easily accessible resident information.
  • Work with the Resident Support Team to foster community in the house based on knowledge of what individual residents desire.
  • Work with residents to move on from Assisi House when ready or necessary.

Resident Management 

  • Develop relationships with area service providers, key outreach workers, and shelters to ensure multiple sources of referrals for resident candidates.
  • Manage the Assisi House Referral Form to schedule interviews within a week of the form being completed, secure background checks for each referral, and schedule a move-in or place on a waitlist for future vacant rooms.
  • Complete the move-in and intake process for new residents by completing necessary paperwork upon move-in, preparing each room to be move-in ready, and scheduling a follow-up meeting a week after a resident has settled in.

Crisis Response

  • Respond to urgent resident issues and address behavioral issues that are negatively impacting an individual or the house.
  • Utilize de-escalation and crisis intervention techniques when responding to urgent issues
  • Keep track of residents who seem to be struggling with persistent behavior issues and work with the team to determine the best course of action.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Expectations 

Preferred Experience and Education:

  • 3-5 years of direct service work with vulnerable populations
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in a related field (psychology, social work, etc)

Knowledge/Skills:

  • Harm Reduction Methods
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention + De-Escalation Techniques
  • Motivational Interviewing
  • Trauma Informed Care
  • Commitment to Racial Equity and Social Justice

The Resident Support Specialist will be expected to:

  • Operate at a high level of initiative and independence, not waiting for direction but checking in frequently with Executive Director and staff
  • Schedule and manage their work days with flexibility, allowing for work to occur outside of a traditional 9a-5p schedule and flex work hours to reflect a 40 hour/week schedule with varying hours when needed.
  • Approach the work with creativity and innovation that is rooted in respect and care for Assisi House residents.
  • Meet residents where they are at, never assuming to know more about their situation than they do, and accompany them along their journey
