Director of Development 
Job Description 

Duties/ Responsibilities:

Development Activities 

  • Lead/manage the organization’s development efforts to raise budget targets as specified by the Executive Director and Board. Work with the leadership team to develop and balance the annual agency budget. Develop and manage long-range strategic fundraising plans to secure donations and meet annual revenue goals. Prepare and manage annual Development budget, reporting variances.
  • Research, identify, cultivate, solicit and steward prospective donors from various sectors, and create giving societies focusing on leadership gifts. Manage and grow a portfolio of donors and prospects.
  • Engage the Board, volunteers, and the community in various fundraising and development activities.
  • Create and manage master grant funding calendar; research, write and submit grant applications to companies, foundations, and governmental entities. Responsible for the grant reporting process.
  • Coordinate direct mail annual appeals (including one spring appeal and one holiday appeal).
  • Serve as an organization representative for donors and supporters, building and strengthening critical relationships.
  • Report on development activities and attend Board of Directors meetings, as requested.
  • Comply with all IRS policies, procedures, and fundraising standards.
  • Partner with volunteer leads/chairs to ensure events are fun and mission-driven. Provide budget management, planning and collateral creation, social media and website content creation, sponsorship outreach, and venue selection. Annual events currently include:
    • Trivia Night (fall)
    • Christmas Party (holiday)
    • Backpack Program (summer)
    • Raffle (fall?)
    • Gala Auction (spring)

Marketing and Communications

  • Design and implement a strategic donor communication plan that provides appropriate stewardship and cultivation activities.
  • Coordinate communication within the community to promote philanthropy.
  • Develop and manage the public relations, marketing, and printing budgets/process.
  • Coordinate the production of all the publications and promotional materials, including all donor communication tools and appeals, newsletters, and brochures
  • Develop and execute a social media marketing strategy.
  • Write and publish newsletters, annual reports, social media postings, and other donor communications.
  • Develop and implement strategies for strengthening awareness about Join Hands’ mission, programs, and impact.
  • Attend outside functions where Join Hands has a presence or is the beneficiary of proceeds.
  • Serve as a Join Hands liaison with the general public and community organizations.
  • Maintain and nurture working relationships with other community organizations
  • Oversee communications efforts, including creating and disseminating press releases, media alerts, and images.
  • Maintain working relationships with the press and act as press liaison for the organization.
  • Develop new avenues for media, promotion and news information, and story ideas.
  • Oversee the management of databases and all records, files, gift processing, and donor acknowledgment procedures. Track constituent activities in the database, including event attendance, visits, communication, etc.

Reports to: Executive Director

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Management or leadership experience preferred.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required.
  • Organizational, time-management. and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of grant writing is required.
  • Event planning capabilities.

Requirements:

  • A minimum of five years of experience in resource development, including grant writing and special events.
  • Proven track record of successful fundraising.
  • Excellent computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Donor database experience is desirable.)
  • Experience managing a budget.
  • Must be a team player.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and priorities.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends.
