Lafayette Park Conservancy

Lafayette Park Conservancy (LPC) was founded to restore and preserve the historic legacy of Lafayette Park, the first developed urban park in
the Louisiana Purchase Territory. The LPC was formed in 2001 and operates as a local partner with the City of St. Louis in the administration,
improvement, and activation of the park. This relationship was formalized under terms of the 2004 Lafayette Park Master Plan, which still guides the actions of the LPC.

The Role

We are seeking a strategic, results-driven part-time Executive Director to, in cooperation with the Board of Directors, oversee and lead all aspects of the organization. As our next leader, you will work with the Board to guide the direction of the organization, secure resources to continue investment, and amplify the impact of our work.

You will step into a role supported by an active Board of Directors, a dedicated part-time Volunteer Coordinator, and a future part-time Administrative Assistant. Additional staff positions may be created in the future depending on organizational needs and the availability of
resources.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee staff and consultants to carry out the LPC’s mission and work.
  • Provide fundraising leadership.
  • Serve as a community liaison for the LPC.
  • Support project implementation.
  • Work in close coordination with the LPC Board and Committees.

Qualifications

  • Education – A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution is required. An advanced degree in nonprofit management, public administration, urban planning, environmental studies, or a related field is a plus but not necessary.
  • Minimum Experience – At least seven years of experience in project management in the public, private or non-profit sector. Previous experience in non-profit leadership is preferred.
  • Expertise in leadership, management, fundraising, and community relations.
  • Connections to St. Louis and experience in park or public space management are preferred.

The Ideal Candidate Will Be…

  • A Relationship Builder – You excel at forming authentic connections—with neighbors, partners, donors, and volunteers. You communicate openly and effectively, and you’re able to bring people together around a shared mission for the park.
  • A Strategic Thinker – You understand how to balance long term vision with day to day realities. You can set clear priorities, make thoughtful decisions with limited resources, and guide toward sustainable growth.
  • Mission Driven & Community-Centered – You care deeply about public spaces and believe in their power to strengthen communities. You listen to the needs of diverse stakeholders and ensure the work reflects the people it serves.
  • A Skilled Fundraising Strategist – You are comfortable cultivating donors, writing grants, and making the case for investment in the park. You can articulate impact clearly and inspire people to support the conservancy’s mission.
  • A Collaborative Partner – You thrive in partnership—not only with staff and board members, but also with civic agencies, neighborhood groups, and other nonprofits.
  • Resourceful & Entrepreneurial – You are energized by finding creative solutions. Whether navigating city processes, exploring new funding opportunities, or stretching a small budget, you bring an inventive mindset to every challenge. You are comfortable working independently in a part time environment. You set your own pace, manage your schedule effectively, and keep projects moving without constant oversight.

Why Lafayette Park?
Guided by a strategic vision, the LPC seeks to preserve, enhance, and activate historic Lafayette Park for the community. As the Executive Director, you will have the opportunity to lead an established and respected organization into a period of significant growth and community benefit. Your work will directly impact thousands of community members and will contribute to a more sustainable, equitable, community gathering space!
