St. Louis Area Diaper Bank

The St Louis Area Diaper Bank and Alliance for Period Supplies is searching for a full-time Executive Director.  The Diaper Bank is the only local organization addressing diaper and period supply need and has seen demand for assistance explode over the last few years. Currently, the Diaper Bank provides over 3 million diapers every year and over 400,000 period supplies to low-income families through a warehouse distribution system serving 57+ local non-profit partners.

To deliver these services, the Diaper Bank employs a small, dedicated staff (6), utilizes a cadre of passionate volunteers, and draws on a budget of nearly $1 million.   The new Executive Director must be poised to lead and manage the staff and daily functions of the organization, and be competent to lead and transform the organization through a new strategic plan and exponential growth.

Job Summary

The Executive Director serves as the organization’s chief executive, reports directly to the Board of Directors and works in partnership with the Board of Directors and staff to provide leadership, vision, and strategic direction for the organization.

The Executive Director is responsible for the following:

  • Implementation of policies approved by the Board of Directors
  • Managing the organization’s programs and operations
  • Representing the organization in the community
  • Managing all fiscal resources
  • Managing the relationship between the Board of Directors and the Executive Director
  • Supervising all staff

Responsibilities

Leadership and Management

  • Have a thorough understanding of and passion for the organization’s mission, programs and the context in which the organization operates
  • Actively engage with the staff and Board of Directors on the development and delivery of all services and programs
  • Lead by example by setting high standards, mentoring and instilling enthusiasm in staff, volunteers, board members and in the community
  • Promote a culture that reflects the organization’s values, encourages excellent performance, and rewards commitment and productivity
  • Responsible for the recruitment, employment, supervision and release of all staff
  • Attract, retain, and motivate highly qualified staff, volunteers and board members
  • Maintain official records and documents, insuring compliance with all local, state, and federal tax, employment, and legal requirements including those necessary to track funded deliverables
  • Manage the day to day operations of the Diaper Bank, including resource allocation, staff and volunteer resources, partner management, and diaper and period product procurement
  • Maintain and develop an effective governance structure that promotes diversity, transparent operations, and formal communication channels with the organization’s stakeholders
  • Work with the board to create and implement a strategic plan
  • Create a strong administrative infrastructure (human resources, finance, database, technology, etc..) that supports the Diaper Bank’s current operations as well as future growth

Community Engagement

  • Act as the face of the organization. Manage communications, media and outreach strategy to enhance awareness of the organization and visibility in the press in order to cultivate new donors, community partnerships and volunteers
  • Have experience with and appreciation for the power and importance of developing and nurturing grassroots support as part of the Diaper Bank’s growth
  • Respond to community needs through the development of relevant programs and the promotion of greater public awareness of relevant issues
  • Represent the Diaper Bank’s point of view to agencies, organizations and the public. Speak as requested at community events
  • Represent the Diaper Bank, its programs and achievements at community and professional events and in appropriate collaborative groups, committees, associations and coalitions
  • Build positive relationships with partner agencies and organizations, policy makers, donors, funders, media and others critical to the success of the Diaper Bank
  • Lead the development of the organization’s brand strategy
  • Assure the building and maintenance of a positive organizational image in the community

Financial Management

  • With the Board of Directors, plan and administer an adequate annual budget that ensures the organization’s ability to carry out its mission. This includes preparing and monitoring the annual budget, program budgets, capital expenditures, investments, managing cash flow and financial management systems
  • Oversee payroll, taxes, audits, banking transactions, tax and 990 preparations and determine volunteer assistance in this area with input from the Board Treasurer
  • Ensure development and implementation of proper fiscal policies and procedures and risk management guidelines that protect the assets of the agency against fraud and financial abuse
  • Ensure the growth of cash reserves
  • Supervise audits, preparation of expenditure reports and all other fiscal reports
  • Develop and maintain records and reports on organizational goals, milestones and accomplishments

Fund Development

  • Ensure fundraising strategies benefit and compliment the mission and are implemented with high ethical standards
  • Create and execute a long-range, sustainable development plan that provides diversified revenue streams and ensures the Diaper Bank’s strategic goals are achieved
  • Working with the Board President, hold Board members accountable to their fundraising commitments
  • Cultivate and maintain positive relationships with donors and key funders
  • Maintain a database with all necessary information to ensure timely submission and reporting for all grants
  • With the Board of Directors, develop, plan and carry out fundraising activities including grant writing, annual giving, corporate sponsorships, special events, donor cultivation, major gifts campaigns and other organization related solicitations (including e-campaigns)

Board Administration

  • Collaborate with the Board of Directors to further grow an engaged, effective and energized board and ensure smooth and efficient functioning
  • Keep the board fully informed on the financial, political, programmatic, and strategic progress milestones as a regular participant in Board meetings
  • Collaborate with the Board in the development and maintenance of a current, multi-year strategic plan
  • Support and inform the Board with adequate information to help members reach sound decisions and establish effective policies
  • Assist in the recruitment, orientation, and training of new board members
  • Participate in monthly Board meetings and Board committees as needed

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in related field. Master degree preferred
  • A minimum of three years of work experience. Management experience preferred
  • Fundraising experience with a history of successfully generating new revenue streams and working with different funding sources
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse and varied stakeholders
